Ex Machina is the kind of Sci-Fi that appeals to the intellectual side of your brain as opposed to the wham-bam, CGI side. In fact, much of the fun to be had from this downbeat and original tale, is in how it's narrative challenges the viewer to question the very essence of what it means and more importantly, how it feels to be human. And can artificial intelligence, no matter how perfect, ever truly pass for human? These thought provoking questions, as well as two sensational performances from Oscar Isaac as the billionaire, creator Nathan, and Alicia Vikander as his creation Ava, make Ex Machina truly fascinating at times. Even if much of the film is simple conversation and observation, and despite the fact that some of its twists are telegraphed, it still holds your attention throughout and has several insightful things to say about technology, human interaction and the soul.
