Mommy is a harrowing story about one Montreal woman's valiant attempt to care for her emotionally disturbed and violent son with the help of a shy female neighbour. Director Xavier Dolan has crafted a masterwork here. Beautifully naturalistic acting by Anne Dorval and young Antoine Pilon as mother and son, as well as a wonderfully subdued, sympathetic turn from Suzanne Clement as the neighbour. Difficult to watch at times, with several volatile and heart wrenching moments, but equally funny and exhilarating as well. A film full of life, just like the troubled boy at its centre. A wonderful film, one of the best of the year.
