Ah yes another "Couple moves into house where ghastly murders occurred with their creepy children and spooky supernatural stuff starts happening movie". It seems they churn out two or three of these a year which begs the question is anybody asking for these movies? Ethan Hawke is the Capote-Esque writer who investigates grisly murders for his big comeback book, including one that took place in his new backyard. As you might expect there are some evil forces at play. You've seen most of this stuff before, yet there are some genuine scares to be had here and some seriously disturbing home movies that will likely upset some. Gruesome at times with a spiritual hokum storyline which is never fully explained. Hawke does a good job of looking scared as hell most of the time and the moody atmosphere helps a bit but this film's biggest problem is it's just been done too many times before to really be effective.
