It comes as no surprise that Denzel Washington owns the screen in The Equalizer, turning what would otherwise be a fairly routine revenge film into something infinitely more enjoyable. The whole "bad guys mess with a guy they shouldn't have" sub-genre is trite to say the least, yet with an actor like Washington, every line of dialogue seems better than it is, every menacing look becomes all the more effective. You look into his eyes and you truly believe he's capable of offing a room full of armed men in a manner of seconds with nothing but a shot glass and a corkscrew. The film unfolds in a predictable manner, culminating with the inevitable bloodbath, yet even as the corpses pile up, the film never feels tired or unworthy of praise. As a violent, bad ass, revenge film, The Equalizer gives an audience all they could reasonably ask for and more.
