    The Gift

What allows writer/director/co-star Joel Edgerton's film The Gift to work so well is that nearly anyone can picture themselves embroiled in a similarly awkward situation. Simon (Jason Bateman) runs into an old high school classmate Gordo (Edgerton) while shopping with his wife Robyn (Rebecca Hall) He takes down his number with promises of catching up sometime. Unfortunately, Gordo takes "sometime" to mean anytime, and soon starts dropping by unannounced, leaving little gifts, and generally pestering the couple. But what seems like a cut and dry case of "the guest that won't leave" is really far more complicated. Nothing more need be revealed as The Gift pulls audiences in almost immediately, with its realistic and relatable plot, and a trio of strong performances from the leads. Has the feel of a suburban, paranoia thriller, but with so much more to say about people. Not only about the consequences of life's early decision's, and how those decisions can grievously effect others, but also how they shape the person we invariably become. A solid story, deftly told, with a […] ending not likely to be forgotten.
