The buddy-cop movie has long since been a genre dominated by men. From the 48hrs, to the Lethal Weapons, to the Stakeouts, it's a genre women have never really gotten their due shot at. Well if this movie is any indication, they should have gotten a shot a long time ago. For Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCartney are an odd-couple mismatch from celluloid heaven, reminiscent of Lemmon and Matthau in their prime and make The Heat a genuine comedy hit for those who can deal with constant profanity and some surprisingly strong violence. The script, while not anything new narrative wise, does have a strong collection of one-liners and running gags to keep the laughter pretty constant. McCartney is a showy tour-de-force but it is Bullock who has the really tough assignment as the "straight woman" which she absolutely crushes. It is in the contrasting of these two utterly divergent personalities where most of the comedic gold lies and the film never misses an opportunity to do so. A funny and surprising adult comedy one that could lead to a franchise if all involved keep their game sharp.
