First off let me say I'm a political junkie. I love all things politics and some of my favorite films of all time like Bullworth and Primary Colors are a perfect example of just how fascinating the right political movie can be. When I first saw the trailer for Ides of March it instantly became my must see movie of the year and a forgone conclusion that would own the dvd. But if I'm being honest this film was a letdown. Maybe it's because I had such high hopes for it, but I think it has more to do with some of the film's choices. Firstly, this has to be one of the most acclaimed group of uber-talented casts in a movie in a long time and yet most of them have absolutely nothing to do! Why go out and hire the likes of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Jefferey Wright and Marisa Tomei and then give more screen time to Evan Rachel Wood then all of them combined? No disrespect to the lovely and talented Ms Wood but I payed money to see acting heavyweights duke it out in the political arena and what I got was your run of the mill intern story tangent that was dated back in 1999 (Bill Clinton anybody? ) Why give the most screen time to the least interesting character while dynamos like Hoffman and Giamatti are relegated to a few good lines now and then? Are you trying to piss people off? Next there's George Clooney, who co-wrote and directed the film which would perhaps explain why he's not even it in!! Now I know trailers these days downright deceive the audience, and Clooney is smart and classy enough to scale back his screen time in films he directs, so as to avoid the perception of a vanity project, but this is a little overboard. I mean c'mon if you've seen the trailer then you've heard almost everything he utters in the film with the exception of a few naughty four letter words. The whole film I'm thinking where's George (you know the candidate for president!) I knew going in this film was going to be about Ryan Gosling's character (who's in almost every scene) which is fine cause he's the best young actor around and he's brilliant here as well. It's his film and he delivers. But where's his support? Oh and as for the story, absolutely nothing you haven't seen before. There's backroom dealings, sneaky political tricks, crisis's of conscience, sex scandals and is even complete with the "every time I draw a line in the sand" candidate speech that's about as fresh as a police captain asking for a gun and badge. I'm starting to wonder what the hell anybody besides Gosling saw in this movie? George and others I love your work, but next time remember to make an actual movie, you know, where something happens.
