    The Monuments Men

George Clooney as a director is kinda hit or miss. I mean you've got great work like Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and flat out brilliant work like Good Night and Good Luck, yet you've also got Leatherheads and The Ides of March, both of which I found rather underwhelming. The premise of his latest directorial effort The Monuments Men is fantastic. During WW2, a group comprised of art historians, conservators and architects must comb through Nazi occupied territory in search of some of the most treasured pieces of art that were stolen by the Third Reich. Couple that with the cast Clooney has assembled and this movie is a must see. Yet, as was the case with the star studded Ides of March, it simply does not deliver on all its promise. The tone of the film veers uncomfortably from light comedy to serious, making it hard for the viewer to gain any real footing either way. Never is this more clear then when following perhaps the films most well executed comedic scene, the gang discovers a cache of thousands of removed gold teeth. Kinda hard to feel moved while you're presumably supposed to still be giggling. You can tell the boys had a lot of fun making this film and maybe that's the problem. It's like Kelly Heroes without the explosions crossed with the laziest parts of Oceans 12 (Clooney wears Ray Bans practically the whole movie and Matt Damon's his sidekick) A real shame, because if handled better and less nonchalantly this had the makings of something special.
