As relevant today as it was in 1995, PRIEST is not another mindless Hollywood flick with gratutious sex and violence begging for a plot. Instead, it is the heartwrenching story of a young, idealistic parish priest in Liverpool who is questioning his faith. Father Greg (Linus Roache) must grapple with three moral dilemmas which torment him throughout the film: Should he give in to his homosexual desires? Should he break the seal of confession and reveal the incest being visited on a 14 year old girl? And, should he remain a devoted man of the cloth? To make matters worse, Father Greg's convictions and emotions are at odds with those around him, including his mentor, Father Matthew (Tom Wilkinson) -- a liberal priest who, like Greg, has been unable to live up to his vow of celibacy. Thankfully, the heavy scenes in PRIEST are broken up by frequent interludes of comic relief, mostly due to Wilkinson's character, which is almost never lacking in "unpriestly" behavior. Only three criticisms emerge: the relationships in the film form far too quickly, some of the actions and attitudes are exaggerated (presumably for contrast) and the ending is a bit over the top. All in all, this is an excellent film, a must see and well worth the 98 minutes. Caution: Rated "R", the subject matter and depictions are not for younger viewers.
