The characters get images and memories of other "selves" in other planes of existence. That's why the ending is so out of nowhere, you just jump worlds. Look at the part when Gosling and McGregor are standing on the Brooklyn bridge with all those vague, spiderweb-like lines floating around, and the parts where a moment repeats itself over three times, the worlds are just grinding together and it's conflicting reality, space and time. Common people, I'm 16 and I understood it. Go read something about quantum physics.
