A visual experience transforming you back to a viscous time where royalty, sex, treachery and religion were all intricately intermingled. Cate Blanchett beautifully portrays Elizabeth I and is well-deserving of an Oscar nomination. Geoffrey Rush also delivers a powerful and memorable performance. One has to wonder how he was not nominated for a supporting-actor Oscar for this much more deserving stoic portrayal of Elizabeth's advisor than a bumbling theatre owner repeating the same line..."It's a mystery" in Shakespeare in Love. Speaking of which...Joseph Fiennes seems to play the almost exact role of the passionate forbidden lover in both movies. I really hope he does not get type-cast because his presence on film is undeniable. Final comment on the movie, an excellent period piece which drags at times but it's detail to costumes, setting and powerful acting makes it a worth while view.
