I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw as I found the film to be entertaining and the story was not predictable - plenty of good twists. Kevin Spacey portrays a very flawed character. Spacey sees to choose films where he plays real losers so I have a hard time liking him as an actor. Throughout this story Spacey's character David Gale makes many poor choices that cause his life go from bad to worse so I found it believable that this guy could make the choices that culminate in the outcome of the story. I also enjoyed the way the Texas criminal justice system was portrayed in all its self-righteousness. I am tempted to conclude that the reviewers who did not like this film did so because of their stance on capital punishment, which is the films major theme. But that would be cynical so I will give them the benefit of the doubt and conclude that they saw flaws in the film that I didn't see.
