Now this is my kind of movie. The principal character is all ambiguity and confusion. Is he straight? Is he gay? Is he good? Is he bad? His lack of self is writ large and the audience is taken along with him in his tragic spiral. He's certainly far from the psychopath that a lot of people here label him, and I can understand those people who want their characters to wear large good-guy / bad-guy labels around their necks being left in confusion. I salute Damon for going against type here and risking his All-American image. I felt he lacked the emotional presence to carry off Ripley's inner turmoil to full effect, but there was enough there to draw you in. Minghella does it again.
