The film should have explored more of the relationship with his disapproving father, his apprent mistreatment by the bureau. This would have given his character more dimension, may have even made us have sympathy for him. It's easy to hate a traitor who is a bible thumping sexual diviant. However, if you show how he got that way, it makes for a more human, and by extention, entertaining story. Actually, the "why" is the whole point of the movie... isn't it?
