Mantic comedies can be perfectly watchable in the right hands. Frankie and Johnny was cute, Crossing Delancy a success, Only the Lonely a charming delight. These days we are suffered to witness the failures (this pun will be rampant in this review) of most all of Hollywood's contemporary attempts. Failure to Launch is a mottled piece of garbage that simply wastes audiences' time. I'm sorry for being a bit crass but this was an occasion where I became upset with a film. Genuinely upset. Granted I had some laughs, but ALL at the pathetic nature of this film. That only enjoyment I could take from this movie was laughing AT it. Terry Bradshaw is amusing by simply being present while Kathy Bates and Zoey Deschanel are completely wasted on the screen. Our two leads (Matthew and Sarah) add nothing with their tired, predictable actics and minimal chemistry. This film wants to be delightful and goofy but gets caught in silly film trappings. The sub-plots are clear signs, such as the unfunny mockingbird adventure. Instead of dealing with real emotions and real pain (such as the Rom-Com examples I gave before did in varying degrees) this film b-lines for animal gags (absolutely nauseating), wacky friends and awkward scenarios (this whole film is based on an awkward scenario) The filmmaking decision to include such things stupefies the movie, and gives little to no credit to the audience's intelligence. Jokes could be successful if they just knew when to end them. The gun scene with Rob Cordry (of the Daily Show) worked until too much time passed. Another key to this film's Failure (I told you, it's a perfect pun) is it's lack of comic timing as well as overall execution. This film has no heart (or should for that matter) which means that it relies on the silly jokes. This reliance is better left to frat comedies who are willing to take such material to the extremes where it works (about 30% of the time these days) All in all, this tripe is not worth the time and money put into it along with any likewise effort the audience may get duped into using on it.
