It's not to show how unsuccessful Gandhi was to grow up his son, but to show how unfortunate both he and his son were. Gandhi always wanted to teach Harilal the greater aspects of life that Harilal was not capable of receiving. A movie based on a historical event cannot be more interesting and touching than this...
