Note: Mostly for people familiar with the work of Todd Solondz or who have an incredibly twisted sense of humour. You've been warned. If you loved "Welcome to the Dollhouse" or "Happiness" then you'll definitely enjoy "Palindromes" (Palindromes is definitely lighter than Happiness) It finally follows up on the life of Dawn Wiener in suburban-hell New Jersey and adds her cousin Aviva into the mix. This is really Aviva's story more than anything else, a commentary on the whole abortion debate (much like Alexander Payne's "Citizen Ruth") and an indictment on American culture today. Solondz pretty much skewers the Christian right of the US and shows up the shallowness of American liberals also. It's a difficult movie to assess, but if you like watching movies which make you think and laugh t the same time, then you'll enjoy discussing Palindromes, if Vin Diesel or Bruce Willis is more your cup of tea, then stay away: this film is simply not for you. Solondz is quickly emerging as an acidic critic and commentator of American culture and values at home and in the backyard, and has steadily been building a cult following in the past 10 years, critics on both sides of the Atlantic love him while audiences don't know half the time if they should be giggling or groaning in some ways like Wes Anderson's work, Solondz is definitely darker. Go the see the movie and judge for yourself, intelligent movie goers should appreciate this film.
