I was expecting a so-so movie and the beginning was certainly nothing to write home about. But as the Three Kings got deeper into the local political situation, the movie took an incredible surreal turn. The director shows a real desire in wanting the viewer to understand each individual's situation. Hollywood movies tend to show American soldiers as heroic and morally incorruptible and an enemy with no redeeming values. The soldiers in this movie are all in the gray zone. The Some of the violent scenes were absolutely chilling. Personally, I would have preferred that they tone it down a little so those images wouldn't still be floating around in my head. At first, I couldn't have cared less about what would happen to the Three Kings. But by the end, I was on the edge of my seat wanting to find out what would happen to the main characters and to the villagers to whom they promised a safe passage out of the country. The ending was very satisfying. The photography was outstanding. The acting was excellent. Having seen this soon after the toppling of the Hussein regime in Iraq, it could have looked hokey had the story been poorly crafted or jingoistic. It's a credit to the director that the movie remains riveting. I will be on the watch for David Russell's movies in the future. It wasn't a perferct movie, but I give it high marks for its originality.
