Entertaining whimsy that doesn't take itself too seriously. If you like art deco period pieces with careful attention to costume and setting you will enjoy this film. Amy Adams is a bit too frivolous as the social butterfly but Frances McDormand balances her character with an earnest, sensitive characterization of Miss Pettigrew. Ciaran Hinds is avuncular as her romantic interest and the film ties up the loose ends of the heart by the third reel. Hardly a morality tale, but in its gentle pretension the story is likeable enough and it does deepen in tone as it proceeds. Though one can lead a modest life, even face a tour of duty on skid row, to have the courage to soldier on while being true to oneself is the greatest achievement. This simple message redeems what would otherwise be a slight, trite comedy.
