Kar Wai needs to get out of America, and stay out of America! (unfortunately it doesn't look like this is going to happen any time soon.) He also needs to beg Christopher Doyle to continue working as his D. O. P. The cinematography was laughable. I generally like Kar Wai's films, but I really struggled to sit through this one. The actors were all poorly directed, and I am guessing (or at least partially hoping) that the screenplay was lost somewhere in it's translation. The film is chalked full of cliché's, and is told through the eyes of a naive little boy from Hong Kong, who goes to America, in search of the "American dream". Unfortunately the boy remains confused, and continues to seek false hope. In many independent film circles Kar Wai has been classified as a "sellout" watching this, I almost felt sorry for him, but by the end of the film I could no longer contain my laughter (keep in mind, the film is intended to be a drama) As soon as I began to laugh the rest of the audience quickly joined in.
