The film is chalked full of cliché's, and is told through the eyes of a naive little boy from Hong Kong, who goes to America, in search of the "American dream". Unfortunately the boy remains confused, and continues to seek false hope. In many independent film circles Kar Wai has been classified as a "sellout" watching this, I almost felt sorry for him, but by the end of the film I could no longer contain my laughter (keep in mind, the film is intended to be a drama) As soon as I began to laugh the rest of the audience quickly joined in.
