I have read the book (just the three series that are shown in the movie) and I liked it. I think the movie itself is even better than the book. (-*(

I just saw this movie for the first time over Christmas 2007 and I was hugely impressed! What a funny and visually brilliant movie. The two kids are fantastic actors and Jim Carey shows just how brilliant he is. Great cameos from Billy Connolly (my favourite comedian)and Meryl Streep put the cherry on top. How anybody could give this show a bad rating is beyond me.

Worst movie ever... the book was 10 times better the book compared to the movie was out of of context... they miss out on a lot of scenes and they distort an arrangement of scenes... and worst of all they foreshadow whats going to happen in the last of the books when it's the first three books, who ever produced movie really killed the spirit of this Lemony Snicket Classic, Jim Carey was a terrible mistake, Count Olaf was nothing like what he was portrayed to be in the movie he is a dark creepy character who kills people, Terrible Acting.

If you're a fan of the books, the movie follows very closely.

The captured the essence of the first three books exceptionally well. The casting was great - Jim Carrey's whole was leading up to this part. I hope they do make more in the series; my kids and I have read them all, and we're waiting for the next installment.

They better make the sequal. Using the 4th, 5th, and 6th book, as the story line. Like they did in the first movie.

“Unfortunate” a word which means regrettable, unluckily and disastrous, a word that has been put into the title of Lemony Snicket’s series of books. Anyone who has read the books knows that the word unfortunate in the title does not mean that the books are regrettable to read, but that the events that occur to the three Baudelaire orphans are very unfortunate and sad. Although, in the case of this movie, the word unfortunate should be considered for the film itself. After coming out of the theatre you will regret watching it, feel very unlucky that you spend 9$ on the ticket and try to think of any other movie that you have seen which was as disastrous as this. Albeit Jim Carrey’s usual laugh out loud gestures and expressions the visual effects were non comparable to films we are used to in today’s technology, such as Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. The movie is made up of the three first Lemony Snicket books, The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room and The Wide Window. The story tells about the miserable adventures the three Baudelaire children go through after their parents perish in a fire, and an evil relative they have never met, Count Olaf (Jim Carrey), jumps in as their guardian, eager to get his hands on their large fortune. In the movie's opening scene the narrator, Lemony Snicket (voiced by the extremely charming Jude Law) advises that, "It's not too late to see a film about a happy little elf, " You may only realize at the end of watching the movie that the advise was not such a bad idea! What has made this movie not even close to being as good as the books, is that it did not stay true to the spirit of the novels. Everything that took place in the series of books were very gloomy, contraire to the movie, where everything and everyone were much too bright. This is just but the first movie of the series of films which will be released, and hopefully the director (Brad Silberling) will re-read all 11 of Lemony Snicket’s books and try his best to make the rest of movies so good that they can actually be a little bit as enjoyable as the books.

My nephew was excited about bringing me to this movie even though he had seen it once already. He reads the books. I couldn’t help but have some of his enthusiasm rub off on me. Jim Carey pulled off another great performance.
