There are many ways to describe the real Harvey Milk, such as a passionate gay rights activist, or a man who fully stood behind and fought for what he believed in! To some, he's even a hero! There are also many ways to describe actor Scean Penn, such as a natural born actor, or an academy award winner, or even a hero in his field! ; His oscar worthy performance in the portrayal of Harvey Milk is truly extraordinary! Directed by academy award nominee Gus Van Sant and co-starring James Franco, Emile Hirsh and a host of other talented actors, this is a movie that will find a very honorable place in the history of cinema! Harvey Bernard Milk was born on May 22nd, 1930, in Woodmere, New York. By his early teens, he was already aware of his homosexuality, but he chose to keep it from his family. In 1947, Milk entered the 'New York State College for teachers' in Albany, NY, After earning his degree in 1951, he joined the navy and even reached the rank of junior lieutenant before his honorable discharge in 1955. Returning to 'The Big Apple', Harvey took a job teaching high school. By this time, he was living openly with his lover, Joe Campbell. After a couple of years, he left teaching and worked for the Wall Street firm of 'Bache and Company' in 1963. After a while, Harvey decided to move with his new lover, Jack Galen Mckinly, to California where the pair opened a photo shop on Castro Street, in the heart of what was becoming the city's gay neighbourhood. He decided to run for a spot on the board of supervisers in San Francisco's city council and came tenth. Though he lost the election, he gained enough support to put him on the city's political map. In 1977, he was finally elected, becoming the first openly gay elected official in the city's history. On November 1978, he and Mayor 'Mascone' were shot to death by Dan White-a former city supervisor- in protest against the passage of the city's gay rights law! He was only sentenced to five lousy years in prison!
