User's review

This movie is not a "fairy tale" - the back drop was a the Spanish Civil War - its basis is in realty. The fact that it has fantasy elements is that they are invented by Ofelia's character to escape the realities of the war. The whole thing was profoundly sad. I originally thought it was going to be along the lines of Lord of the Rings - but it definitely wasn't. The fantasy sequences were incredibly well done - you just have to stomach the unpleasantries of the war. It is an excellent movie - but not one that I would want to watch again.
