The dogs are cute! Other than that it's not a bad movie.

Revised title: 'How to become an animal activist' or 'Don’t go out with a girl-dog'. Not a great movie, just ok, but it needed too be done. It's nice to care about animal but not to the extent of denying what we are has a species; omnivorous creatures.

The movie was good. Molly Shannon was great. The movie is clean enough for a 10 year old to see but has a somewhat grown-up theme-what are you doing to make a difference? There are people we all know who don't quite fit in with society and this film tries successfully to show you don't have to fit in to be happy. A positive message we should all consider.

Some reviewers found Mike White's Year of the Dog depressing. It's actually very life-affirming and inspirational. The film is about finding your own true love, with a very open-hearted and wise view of the many diverse shapes that love can take. Molly Shannon is excellent in the central role, hitting all the right notes in her portrayal of a meek, sensitive outsider who stumbles and falls on her way to discovering a sense of purpose, her passion and her voice. It is clear that White genuinely likes and cares about people. He has an uncanny ability to understand them at a very profound and sophisticated level. All the characters are unglamorous and believable, resembling people you might meet every day. While every character has her or his moment to look silly or even repugnant, each is also shown in an act of kindness, gentleness, patience or tolerance. The uniformly strong cast easily rises to the challenge of honestly and bravely exposing the flaws in each character while still remaining sympathetic. Year of the Dog is perhaps one of the most compassionate, humane films ever made.

Not at all what I expected, but it's good. Nicely done, the characters were well play and the story is well build.

Molly Shannon showed me that she is a talented actress capable of playing more than one note. I really enjoyed her performance. Too bad it was in this film.'Year of the Dog' can't decide whether it wants to be a movie or a PETA documentary directed by Michael Moore. The story line starts off great and then quickly degenerates into a tiresome "message" about animal cruelty. If the message were in a documentary I would have valued it... But I was lead to believe this was an entertaining story. I found the direction at times also poor and annoying. (Note to Mike White. Check the eyelines. Your actors were often looking into the lens on the close ups.) I saw the potential here for another 'Little Miss Sunshine'. Too bad it didn't get there. I am giving it a five because of Molly Shannon's performance, otherwise... AF.
