Possibly, Chris Nolan did "Memento" while conscious of Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon." Both movies are about a murder mystery that is hard to solve, with a number of conflicting descriptions and explanations that seem equally true. If we closely observe, Kurosawa provides clues that lead to a sense of evil existing in reality, as if we are in a kind of hell that some strangely find acceptable and appealing.

This movie IS great. I have seen very few movies with Toshirô Mifune by Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurais), but those I've seen, are sure worth any sum of money you pay to get in the theatre or to but the DVD. Rashomon is the story of a murder, as told by THREE different people (those who saw the film know why I I can't say... You know what), each persone having its own version of the deed. First the wife of the killed husband, who was the object of the scene, then the murderer himself (Mifune), and then the dead husband, who speaks through a medium sorceress. Each version is played by the actors as they tell the story... It is simply amazing in morality and weaknesses of human nature. The ned leaves you on that idea, nad this movie certainly is a good reason NOT to underestimate Japanese filmmaking (beyond the obvious talent of Manga cartoonists... )

Both Toshirô Mifune and Akira Kurosawa are legends in Japan and this movie well shows why. A movie by artists, for artists.
