Very bad. Avoid. Typical USA centric view on the world, not only did they not get the Enigma first (read your history), they can then crew a damaged German sub better then the Germans.

To that British guy: Don't get so worked up over a movie that was "Americanized." Also, us cowboys that joined the war too late also ended the World War II. So you should be greatful that we joined, or more of your country's men would have died in the hands of the Germans and Italians. Also, not only the British fought to get the code breaker, and you are claiming that the Americans had nothing to do with it. REMEMBER HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI, THOSE WERE TO END THE WAR FOR THE WEAK-ASS BRITISH COMPLAINERS LIKE YOU! The movie was good, but was also Americanized due to the fact that Americans made it. It's a good movie, exciting and entertaining.

I am a captain in the British Army. When I saw this movie I was very upset and sad to see how the american movie industry would make a movie and take all the credit for a job that was not even done by them. Alot of british soldiers and spies died to get the enigma code breaker. I think that we should respect that and be greatful to them and to honor them not a bunch of cowboys who joined the war late.

A great movie, although very "Americanised" considering it was actually the British who captured the Enigma. But forgetting that, it was a superb movie, one I will see again.

I Think that U-571 is a very good movie showing the real side of war. The fact that this conflict never happend in the war, but The "Enigma" was captured at another time. I am glad that it was stated at the end of the movie made a diference. The movie was well made. I liked the part when the distroyer. I liked the movie and can't wait until Pear Harbor comes out!

Crap. I haven't given another movie that I have seen this year less than a 5 so far, but this was aweful. I didn't find any mérit in this movie (story-wise, suspense-wise, knowledge-domain-wise, character-development-wise, special-FX-wise), except for one thing: my wife got her Matthew McCaunaghey-fix. She loves him and she even admitted that it sucked. Don't event bother renting it!!!

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] U-571 is simply more Hollywood rubbish. It isn't even worth viewing from a special effects standpoint. This film stands among the likes of Saving Private Ryan, because of it's horribly inaccurate depiction of history along with it's sadly simple portrayal of good and bad. This is definitely not, by any means a thought provoking film. Rather you can just sit back, listen to the various explosions, admire Matthew McConaughey in his dashing (if that is your fancy) role, all the while waving that mini American flag for the envitable American movie formula: America saves the world again + against the uniformly bad villians (Germans) = American further spreads it's propagandist and false construction of freedom and goodwill. Sure! Terribly predictable, this film is better enjoyed by it's two minute preview. Two movie comments: First, all war buffs will REALLY enjoy the fact that from one measily torpedo a destroyer fireballs like the space shuttle Challenger. Secondy, notice when Wentz the only member of the US sub of German heritage, is interviewed to verify if he speaks German. This is one of film's most funny moment because of it's writer's and director's insulting of lack talent in terms of achieving it's plot point in a subtle manner. Once Wentz, a shy and timid sailor, is asked (in German if he speaks the language) he facial expression instantly changes and he becomes this evil character only for the duration of his German conversation, then he reverts to his shy and timid self... funny. The problem with this film is that a large majority of the population will interpret films such as these as accurate and literal translations of history, hence promulgating the continued ignorance and naivete that flows from our southern neighbours. If you want to see a real World War 2 sub film, see Wolfgang Petersen's Das Boot.

This movie was great. It had lots of action, and when the action stopped, pouf, there it is again! The explosion sounds of the bomb barrels in the sea were great! The begining was spectacular, soemthing you don't see in regular movies, action in the the beginning!!

It's pretty good movie, it shows how bad the war is. And the movie makes you feel be inside of the battle. The sound quality is really excellent and run around. A movie must see in theatre.

Considering I'm not really a wartime movie buff, I was impressed by U-571. For 2 hours I tuned out the historical value of the film (which, I might add, has been criticized as innacurate at times by some fellow reviewers), and I was on the edge of my seat to see what happens next to the handful of men confined to an enemy vessel, doing their solemn duty while trying to stay alive. Matthew McConaughey is the star of the movie, but the spotlight is shared by the rest of U-571's crew, which includes Harvey Keitel, newcomer Dave Powers (Tank), "Idle Hands"' Jake Noseworthy (Wentz), music star Bon Jovi (it's "Young Guns 2" revisited... he's there but we don't notice unless someone mentions it) and Terrence "T.C." Carson (Eddie, the only black man in the whole movie). ((Carson was in in a sitcom with Queen Latifah (Living Single) in the role of Kyle, a suave salesman who always have his 2-cents to put in. Don't be surprised if this movie is the beginning to a superstar status for Carson)) I recommend this movie for anyone who has seen all the other blockbuster summer hits so far... just a fair warning though: The sound effects, though good and convincing, can be overwhelming at times, especially when the Germans start dropping depth charge after depth charge after depth charge...

I was afraid to go see this movie because most submarine movies I've seen were very good (Red October, Crimson Tide, ... ) and I thought this one would flop... but to my surprise, it was quite good... You should go see it, and it's worth paying the full price. A little reminder: the story is based on true events but many things are obvioulsy exagerated... this is not a history lesson. The acting is quite good as well. Check it out.

This movie will keep you at the edge of your seat. It will feel like you haven't come up for air until the characters do. If you are clostrophobic, do not see this movie, but if you are not, enjoy. I was expecting a touch more action, but that factor was acceptable.

Entertaining movie. Movie effects are good to great, but effects are limited due to the subject matter taking place in the 1940's (no lasers sorry). You don't cry at deaths because there are so many people involved like in actual war. You cannot dell on a lost commrade war goes on. It fell a bit short for me as I believed they would actually use the coding machine for battle. But movie followed the real story of the allies keeping secret, on the possession of the coding machine to re-route convoys where the wolf packs weren't.

This movie has some errors and omission of history but as far as some comments of taking hairbrained or rambo type risks, I guess you just had to be there and listen to the props overhead and the depth charges exploding all around. It's meant to be entertaining not a documentary and remember the old maxim "TO THE VICTOR GOES THE SPOILS" history is written by the victors, and misunderstood by there children.

Of course you have to take this movie with a grain of salt. It is not a documentary, it is not necessarily meant to be realistic or historically accurate. You have to go in there with the right expectations, and then you will find that is an exciting movie and good entertainment, nothing more. It doesn't have any profound message to give you, it doesn't give you some new understanding, but there's a time and a place for everything. I enjoyed myself immensely.

U-571 is definitely not the best way to spend your movie money. The least of the problems are many inaccuracies to actual WWII history, naval tactics, and science, which makes you wonder who, if anyone, did the research for this movie. Even if no one did the research this movie still should not be so uneducated. Even if you ignore that fact and see this as a sci-fi thriller it is still not a good one. First of all, the characters are extremely shallow and they have absolutely no personality what so ever. There are many great opportunities in the movie to move the audience emotionally but the director didn't take advantage of them. The fact makes the movie very emotionally flat. The acting is not bad but the actors' efforts are wasted by the poor directing and script. Ok, so you say you are not here to watch an art movie and you don't care. Well, the actions aren't remarkable neither. The lightings are poorly done which make the actions very confusing. The action themselves are pretty brainless with repeated let-rush-blindly- into-the-danger- and-pray-we- somehow-survive tactics in every situation. The trailer is certainly misleading which want you to believe there's an "entire German fleet chasing you down" but the scale of the battle is actually very small. Don't expect an epic battle, there are only two boats chasing each other. I am very disappointed at this movie and would urge you not to give your hard earned money to encourage the production of poorly researched, poorly executed mass-market-junk like U-571.

This movie will do nothing but pump your adrenaline to caustic levels. It has no real plot, it's not realistic, and the Germans are portrayed as sub-humans, as if the movie tempted the audience to cheer everytime one was killed. Let's face it, WWII movies made in Hollywood are always biased!

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] Typical Hollywood war movie portraying American bravoury and German cruelty in a totally irrealistic and historically inaccurate manner. The moral of this movie is: 1) Germans kill for the love of killing 2) Americans can operate a German U-Boat better than its trained German crew 3) A supposedly dead battery would last for ever when it's in favour of the Americans 4) Submarines bend, they don't break! 5) The same lightbulb can explode several times! 6) A lost raft carrying our American heroes and floating in the middle of the atlantic ocean will unquestionably be rescued by US Navy. WORST war movie I have ever seen!!

I hadn't been that excited to see a movie in a long time. The idea of a pure action, suspense film was the lure. Anyway, the film lived up to my expectations. Great tension, good action, and rather than attempt to fill two hours with effect after effect, the film focused more on the crew which I really enjoyed. Go see this one, it won't be the same on video... you need the screen and the volume.

No character development, ho-hum to boring acting, ultra predictable formula, laughable ending and missing that element that is so important
what is it
er
oh yeah, realism! Lets face it; submarine movies have been done to death. Sure we have big bangs and noise, a hunt scene and of course an uncontrolled dive scene, but to what end? Something original? Surely not, after all this is Hollywood! Lets just say that a gunfight in a sub seems somewhat ridiculous, not to mention grenades (does ricochet and devastating damage mean anything to anyone in LA-LA Land?) Simply put this is simply no Das Boot
not even in the same class of film by far. With me it earns points only because it managed to tell its joke of a story without resorting to the undue use of foul language (amazing) or gross sexual overtones (equally amazing). Sorry, but it just too American for my gut (gee I didnt know that the Nazis ...had no heart and will kill anything
but Americans would rescue Hitler himself if he was found alone and stranded (please salute now and raise the flag). Ouch! Heck rent it for 3 bucks and save the 2 dollars for a bag of chips.
