I really enjoyed this film, although I'm not sure that I would call it a "comedy". Strong performances, thoughtful storyline, enjoyable evening out.

The Visitor is a subtle, personal and powerful warning cry about the current political climate since 9/11. It centres on an academic who hides in his ivory tower, having lost all sense of purpose in his life since the death of his wife. He lectures about globalization without conviction, having lost interest in the subject a long time ago. That is until he comes face to face with the very human side of the economic policies he teaches about. When two illegal immigrants come crashing into his life by chance, he starts to understand the beating heart of the issues that he is supposedly an expert on. Through his blossoming relationship with the couple, his passion, rage and ultimately his humanity are reignited. Richard Jenkins gives a standout performance as an emotionally numb, uncaring individual on a path to rediscovering his soul and the joy in life.

I found that time just kind of dissappeared and it was over so fast. A slow paced movie however that makes you appreciate emotion. It's not a documentary about post 911 immigration issues, it's about friendship and new beginings. It's really a comedy with some great laughs. Well worth seeing. Don't watch the trailer because esential that is the entire move...

Sad and beautiful. A subtle and believable character are ensconced in the Orwellian bureaucracy of post 911 immigration law. If you liked "Lives of Others" or "Starting Out in the Evening" then this film will probably not disappoint.

A great movie, which ended far too soon. It left me sitting there to the very end of the credits, hoping that somehow it would suddenly start up again where it had left off. Ron.

A good movie is like a ripe grapefruit. The director squeezes as much as he can out of the script and the actors, and then when you watch it, the film squeezes as much as it can out of you. That said, there just isn't a lot of juice in this movie. No one's fault, given the ambitions of the plot and the nature of the characters, what more could come out of it? I suppose someone could say it's an "intelligent" film. I don't see that. There are lots of books and articles about detention, the bureacratic state, and the impediments to globalism. As a commentary on these things, not much really occurs. It does make an effort to show how these things come together in a dramatic situation. Sorry, I'd rather watch Iron Man. I can give you a list of 50 excellent documentary films on topics like this and they are all worth watching, but I don't see this film as Friday night entertainment. The acting is very good, and I think that the Taliq character is better played than the character of the professor -- Taliq is really the central figure in the plot, the catalyst, and he manifets charisma sufficient to energize everyone around him.

Great movie! Deserves to be nominated for academy award as the best movie of the year and for the best actor. Very touching.

Great performances by "everyone" in the movie and whilst I don't think this movie will be seen by the majority of the movie-goer's that will be their loss. I think this movie shows what (occasionally) goes on it mainstream America and this is for both American citizens along with immigrants, albeit legal or illegal. The only part of the movie I found a little unbelievable, albeit refreshing, was the lack of 'police' other than the tiny, albeit most integral, scene in the movie. Well worth the money and, someone once said, 'time well spent' :D

WOW. Hands down the best movie of 2008 so far! Will probably make the top ten of the year. Note: I haven't seen Iron Man yet and I suspect that will be the best of 2008 THUS FAR. Anyway, The Visitor is a terrific drama and really heartfelt. Tackles the immigration issue in a post 9/11 world really nicely but I think the main theme here is just identity. I love how much they developed the main character. When you first meet the character, the last think you want to do is spend 2 hours watching him, but as time passes, you want to really meet him to see where he's at nowadays. I'd love to chalk that up to an amazing script (which it was) but you've gotta give full credit to Richard Jenkins. Must be the role of a lifetime for him, maybe an Oscar nomination? The wierdest thing about this movie is that even though it ended up going exactly where I suspected the movie was going to go, it still surprised me on many levels. This screenwriter, McCarthy, really has a gift. I'm definitely going to see more of his films in the future. Yay for independant films!

Very moving film about real issues. Offers an interesting perspective into post 9/11 immigration issues in the US. There are also some moments of humour which help to keep the film from getting too heavy. Characters are realistic with a couple of excellent performances. Slow going but worth seeing. This is an intelligent film that allows you to really feel something about a complicated situation.
