This is a good off-the-beaten-path kind of a film. Anne Hathaway takes on this challenging roll fearlessly and the dysfunctional family dynamics here are intricate and well explored. Family + wedding = elements of disaster and character growth and learning. Not bad, not amazing. Nice family character study.

The acting was very good, but the dialogue was an awkward mixture of the painfully superficial and the painfully deep. Throughout the film one expects the director to plunge headfirst into the crisis that has evoked the bland surface of unlovability in this family; but it never happens. People give love, it is not accepted; and they wait for love that cannot be given. In many other ways they demand of each other what they cannot give to each other. Sometimes they are so undressed that their skin is peeled off, and then they cover themselves with wedding cake frosting (my metaphor for superficial social graces) If the movie was supposed to simply show this juxtaposition of surface/depth, then it could have been one of those fifteen minute short films. I get that life is like this -- I have a life too. But if I was looking for a pastiche of banality and pathos, I could take a look at my neighbor's yard. And for a second performance I could look at my other neighbor's. Something much more profound should have been made from the labor of love given to this film by its actors.

Pretty depressing movie altogether. I have to say that Anne is quite convincing all the way through but the movie itself wasn't my cup of tea. I do look forward to seeing Anne in more dramatic roles in the future. This performance certainly does hint to her potential as a dramatic actress.

This film is simply awful. I hated the music and the story is poorly written. If you like screaming and yelling but no insight to follow, then it's for you.

You will like this movie IF you like character movies, as there is not much plot but a deep exploration of the significant characters, which SLOWLY unveils throughout the movie. If you like eastern style string quartet music, then you will like the soundtrack. If you want a lot of action and an interesting plot, skip this one.

Anne Hathaway was robbed at the oscars. Kate Winslet, great actress but it seems the Oscars sometimes give the award for the wrong performance. Anne does a great job, not overdoing her emotional rollercoaster role here. This movie is not great but the documentary style filming and the improv style dialogue makes you feel like you are there and that you know these people. Debra Winger, excellent, the actors that play Anne's sister and father. Great. Overall performances: great. Movie itself: okay if a rental as feels like a t.v. movie.

A thoughtful look into all the chaos that surrounds a family wedding. But more than that, a beautiful dialogue about relationships between family members. A worthwhile film to see.

This film tried wwwaaayyy to hard to be edgy, gritty and alternative. With all the different cultures shoved into the wedding ceremony too look so progressive. The ridiculous camera work that looks like a child shot it. To Anne Hathaway chain smoking in every scene, but the only thing is you can clearly tell she doesn't really know how to smoke a cigarette in real life. It all just seemed too fake and contrived. I get that maybe they were trying to go for that realistic documentary thing, but they failed. This movie would have been better off, going for the more stylized polished, look of a feature and not like a college film project!!!

Having read the comments here. I have a different review to offer. I thought this film was fantastic. Ann H. Gave an amazing performance. Well calibrated, knowing just how much to give to each moment. Intense but never over the top. I was worried when I heard that this was another hand held camera film, but I never even noticed this. Where as"Cloverfield" left me nauseous. I never for for one moment found any part of this film boring. I had the feeling of being a voyeur, and the long dance/ party scene was engaging. It did have that documentary feel to it like cross cultural relations Uniting in harmony. In the end whether there was actual resolve for the characters is left to the viewer to determine. I was left with a sense of hope and feeling uplifted.

If your a fan a great music and familiar with more obscure pop artists like Robyn Hitchcock, you'll love this movie. Luckily I was even though I didn't know how musical this movie actually was going into it. Easily Anne Hathaway's most impressive role.

This film just tried too hard to be cool. As everyone else said the hand-held camera was a big mistake. It did make you feel sea sick. The multi ethnic theme was corny and over done. Sure we all love one another and embrace each others' differences but this was overkill! The only etnic group they missed were the Arabs... or were they in it as well.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] This movie tries way to hard to be profound but ends up being just self-conscious, calculated and contrived. At one point early one, we see the faux documentary camera close in on the annoyed face of the friend of Rachel's sister, just to let us know that these two don't like each other. It reminded me of This is Spinal Tap (when the camera let us know that Nigel didn't live Janine), and may Spinal Tap forgive me for mentioning the two films in the same sentence. The scenes with Debra Winger as the mother were contrived, the multi-racial politically correct wedding scenes were contrived. Really irritating movie.

An absolute gem, no other way to describe. LISTEN TO NO BAD REVIEWS!!! This is an experience not to be missed and if Anne Hathaway doesn't the Oscar, the Academy ought to be ashamed. An emotional punch to the face is the only way to describe this movie and you will be so moved there is no way to describe. See this movie. And then see it again and think about your family while doing so.

Wow. Ouch. That was horrible. At first, I forgave it for trying to look like a documentary. But it just got absurd and pointless after a while. And what was with the need to cram as many cultures into the ceremony and reception as possible? Felt like a cheap version of a Wes Anderson film at some points. I'm a dude, and I was with 5 other women - and they all hated this film too... just so you know you're not just getting a sexually biased review here. Super-poor. I hated all the characters. No one stood out.

It was a little tiresome, heavy on the problems of the american bourgeoisie... if you are into therapy and soaps you might enjoy. Nice to see Debra Winger, tho her role as are almost all , in underdeveloped. Attempts at being atlmanesque, not quite succeeding. Anna Devere Smith is given nothing to do. The wedding party after goes on too long, just watching different people dancing. Nice to see an interracial couple depicted even if clumsily so... and none of the African-American characters are fully developed... Roger Corman is supposedly in it - however I must have blinked as I did not see him.

Caution: Nasty Review! This movie is like a poor American version of Thomas Vinterberg's "The Celebration" (from 1998) If you are 20 years old and a narcissist," Rachel Getting Married" will probably feel authentic, even profound, but if you want to see the well-made and subtle original (upon which Rachel has borrowed so clumsily), check out the Vinterberg.

Great to read these reviews - I wondered if I was crazy after reading the critic's ratings. This was the second movie I ever walked out of (the first was Duke of Hazzard) I hope the 10/10 folks will do their ordinary friends a favour and at least warn them of the nausea inducing camera work and the tremendous scope of the dullness. Worst movie I've seen since "Open Water". We wanted to leave half way through it, but stayed only because of Anne Hathaway's performance. A bit of a downer, what with the main character in recovery after having done something pretty depressing. Not much of a story arc as we're not really sure where anyone stands at the end of the piece. If anything, it's a study in disfunction and the potential for family to overcome and forgive. Not so much entertaining as thought provoking. Personally, I found the eclectic mix of people attending the wedding a little hard to swallow. But it could just be that the weddings I've been to were boring. Good performances though. Very open ended.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] Ever wanted to be a fly-on-the-wall at someone else’s wedding? The voyeurism enabled by wandering hand-held cameras (even within the movie) imparts a cozy sense of intimacy to this portrait of two families uniting to celebrate a wedding. With a script by Jenny Lumet, daughter of director Sidney Lumet, working with Gail Buckley, granddaughter of singer Lena Horne, Jonathan Demme’s cinema verite version of a hippie wedding with Indian garb, Brazilian carnival atmosphere, bluesy vocals and New Orleans instrumentation is very much a search for as well as a riotous celebration of connexions. Anne Hathaway plays the self-absorbed, self-aware, bratty black sheep of the family come back to upstage her sweet, sometimes sulky sister Rachel on the eve of her nuptials. Her determination to impale herself on the cross of atonement and to make amends by letting the cat out of the bag threatens to (but never quite) unsettles the entire proceedings. Is it just a little too much of a coincidence that her sister’s best man turns up at Narcotics Anonymous and can be counted on to help her initiate a wedding tradition of having the best man bed the maid of honour? Or that he remains patient and supportive to the end? This is not so much the dreaded secret that spirals out of control as the tragic error that refuses to be resolved. That irrevocable split is personified by Debra Winger and Bill Irwin, who are superb as the parents who have developed completely opposing coping mechanisms after going their separate ways. If “Rachel Getting Married” is only peripherally about either Rachel or her wedding, it gives us an insight into the messy highs and lows of being family.

I had no idea that Anne's character was an ex-model until I read the review. I liked the concept of this film and I admire Hathaway's attempt to break out of the Princess roles. I thought the older sister was incredible and thought the film tored to capture some original material. The film is intense and raw at times. It was a brave attempt to capture a family in recovery. This film is not for everyone and is hard at times. I do appreciate the honest attempt but the actors and the director.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] Boooring... tried too hard to be a "quirky independent" film - how cute: rachel rides a bicycle and rachel trips over the chair when arriving late... by the end of the movie the sister and the groom were ANNOYING beyond belief and was sooo tired of watching the sister smile endlessly and the "husband to be" do absolutely NOTHING the whole film... way too long... why is everyone so impressed with Anne Hathaway - is playing a recovering drug addict not acting 101?

I have always been a fan of actor, director and producer of Jonathan Demme's work (Fighting mad; Handle with care; Philadelphia, etc..) and who also happens to be The late Ted Demme's uncle)! Having such strange and troubled characters in his movies seems to be his trade mark so far, just like the character Kim in this movie (played by Anne Hathaway), for which rehab has almost become a second home for the past ten years! She asks for and obtains a weekend leave in order to attend the wedding of her sister Rachel (Rosemary Dewhite) But everybody on the list of invitees have their hands on their hearts as they know that everywhere Kim goes, trouble follows and that long simmering tensions in the family usually surface in her presence... !! ; Good acting especially by Anne Hathaway (who is getting better and better after each role (loved her in 'The princess diaries', 'The devil wears Prada' and many others! ; Rosemary Dewhite does a great job as well! ; Also starying Mather Zickel as Kieran and Bill Irwin as Paul, 'Rachel getting married' is a rough yet sweet movie about the harsh realities of life and the struggle to be accepted within your family and society in general when you're so different than the norm! ; It's both funny and thought provoking at the same time and I recommend it!

Rachel Getting Married? Who Cares! This was the worst movie I've seen in a long time. The camera jerked around making me nauseated for the entire film. I nearly lost my dinner on the people in front of me. There were parts that could have been cut out or cut down in time. Some scenes went on awkwardly too long and were extremely boring. Certain characters were terribly developed leaving the viewer wondering if they forgot a scene. I nearly walked out many times. The only redeeming thing about this movie was Anne Hathaway's performance. She did well but it's still not worth watching this film. Watch clips of her performance on Youtube.
