If you can pay attention, and read subtitles, you will enjoy this well edited thriller. It is of the Hitchcock genre, with excellent acting. Byron at the Bijou.

This movie was so good that I actually shed a tear at the very end! I enjoyed it so much that it is very hard to watch a basic movie anymore. Foreign films are so deep and worthy over every penny spent on admission and food. I think it is worth seeing and extremely well written with good acting.

A very rare movie with a load of life's lessons for all. Sometimes pain and suffering allows humans to become stronger and this film shows that the human spirit is stronger than any pain and suffering and that we have the power to keep on getting up. And the music was brilliant! Bravo!

The Unknown Woman is Irena (Xenia Rappoport), an emigrant who fled Eastern Europe and has moved to a Northern Italian city. She lives amidst ghosts of the past and a search for the present. Irena seeks a specific job in a building complex where one particular family appears to be her target or rather goal to work for. She cleans hallways and stairs until noticed by Valeria (Claudia Gerin) and Donato (Pierffancesco Favino) who have a young daughter Tea (Clara Dossena) We learn slowly through flashbacks why this family is so vital to Irena and what terror and brutality she endured in Eastern Europe. Each revelation brings us to a better understanding of her motivations and determination to be close to the Adacher family. The script is strong. I cannot just define it as a drama, because that is a vague term. It's also a disturbing film with a warm touch (a heartbreaking plot that twists in a good way)

WOW what a movie! If you are a sensitive at heart, be forewarned, some scenes are difficult, especially if you are a women. Definitely not an American commercial product, it's a co-production Italy-France. It's subtitled, but it’s easy going reading wise. The music is special and so is the story line. It's the kind of movie where you don't want to go to the washroom. It's suspenseful and it will keep you on your toes. At the very least worth 8½!

A film that could really benefit from a good editor and there is so much that could be edited out. All the artsy stuff about the red shoe could be taken out and at least half of the flash backs could go. Finally removing a lot of the graphic violence that truely serves no purpose would also help move this story along. First of all there is no reason for the red shoe other than to implicate the main character in a crime and the film makes no sense in how it attempts to implicate her in the crime because to do so is to no benefit of the character who allegedly did so. If she is convicted, he cannot get what he wants from her and he certainly did not implicate her after he attempted to get what he wanted and died in the attempt, so this entire plot point falls apart. With regard to the flash backs, the audience gets the film makers point fairly early on and his belaboring this point and drawing out the story far beyond that point is unnecessarily boring for the audience. All the Hichcockian references in photography music and sound were interesting to note but the movie fails to deliver on its promise of suspense due to the directors lack of focus on the main story elements. Yes well acted, yes beautifully filmed but this director is no Fellini and what could have been a good movie declines into a so-so movie that if you see you see but if you don't see you haven't missed a thing.

Difficult to rate. Not bad at all, but not great. Fantastic music that effectively intensified some already very tense scenes (when one already expected the worst) made it almost unbearable to watch at times. Certain closeups (for ex of a pair of shiny scissors) gave the movie a touch of a regular horror movie, which may or may not have been the producer's intention. Personally, I think the movie would have been stronger without them.

A wonderful, moving film about a mysterious Ukranian woman living in Italy. At first, we think we know what motivates her but as the film unfolds, we realise that it's not as simple as it seems. This isn't the usual type of film that Giuseppe Tornatore makes but it shows that he is capable of many different styles of film. This particular film is based on a true event he heard of. The message of the film is that no matter what adversity we go through it life, we have to rise above it and continue to live. Also, it teaches us that there are still good people in this world.
