User's review

I find most of the really low rating that are popping up in these reviews to be completely out to lunch. Remember, this movie was made for $20 million. That's practically for free. (comparison- "in search of happyness" a movie where all anyone did was walk/run around san fransico, cost $74 million) I get the feeling that what most of these reviewers are looking for is either a $250 million dollar Quinton Tarantino style WWI gorefest, or a BBC style Documentary where guys with British accents recite encyclopedic volumes of information about the battle. Gross was trying to make a personal story movie about an unimaginably horrible period in history. For $20 million dollars he did a darn good job. I would like to have seen more about the war, but realistically speaking, love scenes are a lot cheaper than battle scenes. I think the movie stands up very well on its own merit, but I can’t help but reach a few other conclusions as well: First, Paul Gross needs more money. Second, there is a deep hunger among Canadians to see more movies, films and documentaries about our collective past. Finally, someone needs to make the 250 million dollar definitive WWI epic.
