Lush setting and lush emotions in this story of betrayal. People are betraying each other and themselves left right and centre as they jockey for a better position in their society. It is dizzying to see the rate and depth to which very ordinary people will sink to grab their dream.

I loved the melodrama of the story and the glimpse of India under British Rule. The photography is magnificent. Truly a joy to watch...

I liked it... vapid melodrama or not... it reflects the reality of human frailities. The characters are not complex and the relationships are predictable but the story line is still timeless and compelling. There is no protagonist and everyone is flawed... acts of moral terpitude.. or a slice of real life set in the splendor and tragedy of colonial India.

A stunning unforgettable movie! Gives incredible insight into India under British rule. A gripping and haunting story from beginning to end. This is no Hollywood Bollywood fluff.

If you like vapid melodrama I'll bump my rating from a '6' to an '8'. The real star of this turgid piece of colonialist pap is India herself. The plantation cinematography is breathtaking. The players are all minor league except young Peter, the Moore's earnest son, a real scene stealer, whose fascination with the motif of soul as dragonfly provides a poetic touch that softens the heavy handedness of the adult players. Linus Roache is grim as the heartless, selfish source of tragedy. He is well contrasted to TK, his major domo caught in a complex, cross-cultural web of moral ambiguities. The final scene is redemptive. It is worth the wait if you are a fan of Harlequin romances and feverish from the fate of Nandita Das, the servant who risks all for love.
