Waking Life is jackass for philosophy. The movie has no plot, you just listen to various people talk about dreams and reality. Very pretentious, and very, very boring.

This movie sucks. Plotless. Visually nauseating. We all fell asleep within the first ten minutes, then repeatedly throughout. Probably the most over-rated film or the year.

Probably the most underated film this year, Richard Linklater's Waking Life is a must see for anyone who has ever wondered about life. It's a beautiful journey though a dream about the meaning of existance from many different people's perspectives. Quite possibly the most interesting dream I could ever hope to have.

May seems hard to understand but it will make you fall again. In a land apart I was dreaming this movie.. n breathing the life away.

You will never see another movie like this again... Sure, on the cover it may appear to be some art house surrealist thing... and sure there is that aspect to it... but there's something more going on underneath it all... this is the closest I've ever seen of a dream on a movie screen...

It may look cool, but it mimics every incredibly uncomfortable and annoying conversation I've ever had with a pretentious ass. It's nearly two hours of regurgitated rhetoric with no substance. I really hated this movie.

Interesting. Very, very interesting. As close as I've ever seen to a dream world being portrayed on the screen. Or a hallucination. The animation methods reinforce this feeling of pseudo-reality. A study of the connection between the world and the mind, the central philosophical theme seemed to be that your existence is only as important as your level, and manner, of interaction with the world. But I guarantee I missed a lot. This movie just throws so much at you, so fast, that you virtually have to see it again to sort through its messages. Probably the most innovative piece of cinema I've seen for quite a while.

This movie really opened my mind and really made me think. It has great theories about life. This movie talks about our human emotions, and what really matters in life. Evolution and changing of the mind is also what they really talk about in some parts of this movie. What really puzzled, yet made so much sence to me was that they say, eternity is an instant, and to say yes to one instant, is to say yes to all existance. Yet I'm very surprised it isn't very popular.

Very good mind food. A non-linear acid trip that shouldn't be missed by thinking people. Excellent for provoking discussion. Very relevant to our times, our society.

Original but not groundbreaking, interesting but not compelling, intellectual but not thought provoking... It tries to be more than it really is and leaves you rather cold. The most interesting thing about it is the effect of rotoscoping hand-held video, but it gets visually tiresome after a few minutes. It's definitely worth seeing for filmmakers and animators, but for the "General Public", I am not so sure.

This film sucks... go see Mulholland Drive or spend the ten dollars at one of the strip clubs, there's prettier colours there anyways.

This has to be one of the best films of this year. A refreshing film. It's one conversation after another. The animation and the soundtrack is just amazing. It deals so much with what is going on now. Not only that, this film has changed and had me thinking. It's good to see this. This is a film that needs to be watched more than once. A great movie to watch with other thinkers and non-thinkers on the subject of life. Now, we need to just turn off the light... hmm, it doesn't turn off.

As some previous reviewers have stated, there are two real elements of interest in the movie: philosophy and animation. Unlike the reviewer that said you should have a full-night's sleep before going to see it, I went at the end of a long work week and found that I was more receptive to just absorbing the environment and philosophy rather than over-analysing it. The scene-by-scene nature of the film's structure should be helpful for those with TV attention spans (and those who were tired like me) -- the story develops in little chunks. [...] Recommended, even if you have to seek this one out.

The animation style was refreshing and a perfect combination for the incredibly thought-provoking dialogue. This film will get you thinking, laughing and appreciating.

Althought this movie has visually stunning animation, you have to be very interested in philosophy and an increadible amount of patience to sit through the entire length of the movie. I for one walked out, along with about 13 other people who made the decision to leave long before I did.

Ah, if only I were so philosophically astute and enlightened that I could dismiss this film as worthwhile only for its nifty animation. But I say to you, fellow lowlifes, do not be dissuaded from taking in what I found to be one of most delightful, inspiring, intelligent and refreshing films in recent history. And yes, beyond all that, the colours are pretty cool.

Wonderful movie. Richard Linklater is such an amazing director. He never fails to make you think. I've been waiting for this movie for a couple of months and it didn't dissapoint me at all. Wonderful, wonderful.

Adolescent banter on American philosophic rhetoric. But the colours are cool.

While I applaud the "new" art, I found watching this film stressful. Very deep subjects skipped over at lightening speed. I felt the images bombarded one. Not a film suitable for a weekend night. Watch this after a good night's sleep.

This is one of the year's hidden gems. Waking Life is a movie that is both thought provoking and entertaining. The structure of this film is very similar to Linklater's earlier film Slackler. Yet what sets this film apart from the latter is the wonderful use of animation. The film was originally shot on digital camera with actual actors, and then all the images were painted over digitally. The result is simply breathtaking; each conversation is painted over in a different style and given a life of its own. The animation also helps to bring the audience into the same dream state as the main character. Surprisingly enough, the animation actually helps to enhance the impact of the numerous (and I mean numerous) theoretical conversations throughout the film. Waking Life is a highly entertaining and original film that is worth seeing. Definitely on my list of the year's best films. -CS.
