This was a wonderful movie. Exquisite. I've never read the novel, but this adaptation seems marvelous. Daniel Day Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer have an amazing intensity and chemistry.

Scorsese once again that he can make good movies of other genres than crime. But did Wynona Ryder really deserve an Oscar Nomination?

The setting, the story, and the actors, are all thrown together to give us an exceptionnally good movie. Each time you watch this movie, you discover something new. Michelle Pfeiffer shows that you can be an exquisite beauty and have talent as well. A beautiful love story, and even a history lesson from the turn of the century, where appearances were more important than emotions. Come to think of it, have times changed that much? A must see movie for those who enjoy spectacular european style movies. This movie is certainly not for action flick lovers, some intelligence and emotional depth is required to understand it, and to get into it.

Set in the late nineteenth century, the movie develops like a book. We are introduced to some wonderful characters who have it in them to stir up passions within their little social world.
