[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] «Truth is cool but unattainable... the truth is totally amazing, but you can't ever reach it. » Y tu mama tambien could be sold as a teen comedy quite easily. The main characters, Julio and Tenoch, are two horny teenagers who smoke grass. They fart on each other, they talk about sex all the time and dont understand crap about life, plus there are some funny dialogues. Like I said, it could be sold as a teen comedy, but when Luisa, an older women, comes between them, things change and Y tu mama tambien becomes a deeper drama about friendship, young men discovering their sexuality, growing up and becoming adults, but also learning about life. Y tu mama tambien is also about the class differences in Mexico, the richer and the poorer, its about having the chance to witness another culture for a little while - if you arent Mexican, of course. Alfonso Cuaron shoots his film with long takes giving a realistic feel but also trying to stay away, just like he was an observer. For that reason it starts out slow but quickly enough, we come to care for the characters and the story becomes very engaging. The performances are very fine, Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal really do look like they have been best friends forever. Maribel Verdu is pretty great as well, as the not-so-older woman who will teach those boys about life and sex. The film is very honest in the way they depict that sexuality, its palpable but never exploitive. It actually quite refreshing to see a film dealing with sex as something normal, without having to be an erotic thriller or a teen sex comedy. I found the final scene totally heartbreaking, cause at that point we know the characters and got to understand where they came from through their conversations but also a God-like narrator who tells us thin bits of information about them or about a character we see just for one split second and ultimately bringing more depth to the film. A great piece of filmmaking.

you are all reading too deep in it, trying to act like film critics and even if you are your opinion is not worth more than a pile of rubbish to me and millions other. The real power of the movie is the emotional catharsis that someone can feel while watching it. It differs among individuals. I personally found it sexy and edgy it make me think, definitely a good piece of film a gem among the bulk of rubbish that worldwide film industry is producing constantly. Criticising it blindly is meaningless, unless you are not able to produces something meaningful yourself, other wise is just like going to a restaurant and ordering a meal just cause you want to go to the toilet and relief.

I was disappointed by this film. I had heard that it was erotic, edgy, and thought provoking. The sex scenes were adolescent and bad - not my idea of erotic. As for edgy - maybe - but edgy without deeper meaning or a point I could relate to held no interest for me. I did not find the film to be thought provoking. The almost thought provoking thing about this film was the cut and paste voice overs about Mexican history. I expect they were intended to juxtapose important social realities such as poverty and survival concerns against the backdrop of a couple of rich adolescent boys on a feel good road trip, but I did not find this meaningful or even interesting.

Hi, Im a Mexican (proud of it) an I think this movie is probably the most honest movie I've ever seen. It treats several tabus in a very realistic way. Im extremely proud of this Mexican movie, and I absolutelly loved it!!!, Especially Gael Garcia (Julio) who I think is the hottest Mexican actor of these days!! A WEBO!!!!!

I saw this movie and loved it I speak Spanish and feel that so much was lost in the translation. You have to understand the mentality to really "get the movie".

I really enjoyed this film. It is definitely the sort of movie that keeps you thinking a long time after you have left the cinema. As someone else mentioned the images in the film really give you a feel for the beauty of mexico, both the landscape and the people. As for depicting 'mexicans as drug fueled and sex crazed like most hollywood films' I think they were more reminesent of 17 year olds the world over.

This Golden-Globe nominated film, one of the top-grossing movies in US history, is a Mexican coming-of-age story that is winning a big gay following that will make it the most talked about movie of the summer. Y Tu Mamá takes seriously the difficult years the US comedies gloss over. This movie is saying that when you are this age it is very difficult to find out who you are. And sometimes it's very painful because you don't really want to know who you are. Sometimes you lose people that you really love in the process--without really knowing why.

I think a lot of people missed the point of this movie. I think it was a very complex movie that even after a week of having seen it, still makes me see new meaning in it. It wasn't about sex, it wasn't about the beautiful scenery. It was about life and its meaning. It was about social and political issues. It was the contrasts between irreality and reality, love and life, and most of all, happiness and the meaning or the utlimate reason for living. This film can be watched in the first degree (fun and sex) , but you would miss all that it was intended to represent.

One of the two or three best Mexican films I've ever seen, has a real style and a great realistic ending. Implicit social commentary, gorgeous cinematography, great date movie for people who talk too much. Highly recommended.

I really hate this movie. The story is very superficial and acting is very bad. Masturbation scene is disgusting. The two kids' babling all the time in the movie is so annoying..

I knew this movie was great, but I was seriously amazed after seeing it. The road trip feels real as if you were part of it! A fun fun film and great story showing us again that life is like the ocean... if understanding we had one life and it was ending fast, we would live it like in dreams. Mirror to Luisa.

I really don't understand what's so realistic about this movie. The only thing the director tries to make this feel reslistic is to cut and paste voice over of historical event occurred in Mexico. But the main plot (the fictional, unrealistic part!) is about 2 guys who started out the journey with the intention of getting close to the Spanish woman and the woman, victimized by her husband, took "revenge" by going off (and e with eventually seducing) 2 boys she barely knew at heart. Then accidentally (as in many hollywood movies) , this turned out to be some "self-discovery". All this is superficial, lame crap! If I want profound and yet interesting understanding of Mexico, I'd rather watch a documentary or read the national geography. Mexican young peopel is sadly misrepresented by the 2 main characters (who are on drugs, after women, sex, and of no seriousness in life) This is yet anther road movie like any other hollywood bad movies.

A film that opened my eyes to Mexico, youth, sex and growing up. Being of latin american origin but having grown up here I found it hard to reconcile both worlds in my mind & my heart. All in all a very recommended experience. (but not for hardcore prudes)

The best movie I've seen in a long time. The journey the main actors take is much more than a road-trip (this is no Crossroads, thank God!) The emotional bonds of friendship are tested, and although there's no happy ending, it's so realistic that it's almost scary. Be prepared for a fantastic movie experience, be prepared to learn a bit about yourself.

The film is quite erotic. Must go see it if you like seeing nice naked bodies (both woman's or man's) Unlike the way Hollywood handles love scene and nude scene, this film simply doesn't try to hide anything! Other than the above aspect, the above film is a pretentious film that doesn't match anything of mastery.

Absolutly fantastic... A film with tons of humor and subtle touches of reality. Presents, in a very original way, the great differences between the very wealthy and corrupt dominant class and the extreme poverty that most of the population lives in. Great performances as well. What a movie.

I enjoyed the view of Mexico in the film, never having been there; the sound of the language; the wonderful portrayal of energetic, obnoxious teenaged boys; and all the really bad sex (Ive been having bad sex myself lately) Recommended.

It's a great movie! Especially if you understand Spanish (Spanish is not my first language though) Una pelicula muy buena que enseña la realidad al mismo tiempo extraordinaria y amarga de la vida en Mexico. Surely worth seeing!!!
