[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] I thought this movie was one of the worst movie I have ever seen. I was BORED to death with the script and the cinematic manipulation of Menno Meyjes. It's a shame because I have been a fan of John Cusack for years and could not stand to see him in such a bad movie. How can they make a movie about as fascinating as Hitler be sooo boooring and uni-dimensional. Meyjes claims to portray him as a struggling artist making choices with his life. I did not see it. I see the cliche demented portrayal of Hitler many have learned to detest. The lines were awful and historically inaccurate. During the beginning of the movie, Hitler suggests that Max stop smoking cigarettes because it causes "cancer." This movie takes place in 1918, did scientific research linking smoking and cancer arise back then? Philip Morris would not have made such killing (no pun intended) if public knowledge about cancer and smoking was evident back then. Despite the bad lines, the storyline did not go anywhere until the end when Max's death was as predictable as his wife and his father noted that they would see him later for dinner. There was never any real tension between the characters or within themselves. The casting was awful... and careless. Why does Max's son speak with a British accent? Why does Max's servant speak with English with a broken German accent? The directing was terrible. The only redeeming quality about the movie was that it was over. This is the type of movie that does not need to be funded or advertised. What was Hollywood thinking?

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] I thought this was quite possibly the worst movie ever made. Before I viewed the movie, I was told it was "highly controversial" due to the "humanising" of Hitler. Humanising? He was once again portrayed as a repulsive monster, though this time a bit more impish in appearance. Why did Hitler's speech (at the end) just happen to take place at the same time as synagogue? Perhaps because the director thought it highly effective for the use of the "fine art" sequence exchange between max and hitler, good and evil, art and politics - or any other cliche, contrived comparison the viewer can "analyse". Or perhaps to further accentuate the "irony" in Max's death? I must say, it was eye candy for any unthinking art collector - Rietveld chairs all over the drawing room (because I am sure these chairs were very easy to come by at the time when they were only specifically designed for the Schroeder/Schrader house in Holland) , and references to the Futurists in every way - as if it were a mere art club. Details, details are so important in a historical film - or rather, in a film with any kind of historical reference. Great antiques, collectible art, and classical-like music does not a good movie make.

Excellent movie I loved it, John Cusack did a great job as usual. It's better than most of the movies playing at the moment.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] The movie... I did not really know what to expect... Menno Meyjes (?) I knew Indiana Jones-the last crusade and The Empire of the Sun... Completely different movies... Max is an intellectual movie... The two protagonists exchange about their vision of art... They both came back from WWI wounded... morally... Hitler is full of anger... Max's attitude is more like "if life gave you lemon, make lemonade"... Max looks toward the future, but at the same time, does not have much faith in that future... But, Max is a passionate man and he lives everyday as much as he can... The ending is... how can I put it? Ironic? I heard a few times about that movie "What if? " To me, there is no possible "What if? " We cannot change history... Someone was mentioning a book "There are no accidents"... I think the ending of that movie is in that line... like there are direct connections between the choices we make or do not make and what happens in our lives... The photography (les prises de vue?) is absolutely fabulous... The music, especially during the end credits is beautiful... Now, the actors: John Cusack looks older... the haircut of course... but it seems that he has the physical maturity of a man who has suffered a lot... sometimes, we also see a twinkle in his eyes... then again, the passion Max has for life... I think he does one of his best performances... Good performance also from Noah Taylor. His Hitler is not despicable, not really... he is just some sort of a loser... we don't pity him... we just think he is not worth much... It was a very good movie!

I'm a huge fan of John Cusack, but he paled in comparison to Noah Taylor; his Hitler may or may not have been historically accurate, but his performance was NOT boring. I found this movie fascinating and sad.
