You can see this type of film on the History channel on TV. Well made if it were a TV movie, but for a motion picture costing you $ 10 bucks, I would have been smarter to wait for its debut on TV in a couple of months.

On level the with another classic war movie, "A Bridge over the River Qwai". Concentrated on the story and characters rather than B&G.

A good movie to see. I'm not usually a big fan of these semi-low budget flicks but this one pleasantly surprised me. Its probably not the greatest war movie you'll see, but it is well done and well acted.

Very well made movie. The story line is great and the stories of the World War II - of which many are untold - are always compelling. There is no 'fantastic' action here and the ending is not entirely your Hollywood type ending as befitting a real war story. Great acting and filming. A must see I'd say. I am surprised that the movie doesn't have a higher rating and that the theatre isn't as packed...

The war memorials often say "Lest we forget". It's so sad that in this day and age of political correctness that we often forget the price people have paid to buy us our freedom. This movie tells a true story and there are Internet sites all about this event. They are worth visiting. We often forget just how good we have it. This was an excellent film.

This was a good movie, not as great as other war movies, but still worthwhile. I have seen more violent war movies. The characters are not complex, most are honorable to the point of exaggerated chivalry (Joseph Fiennes) and the movie was good enough to interest me in the book(s) that inspired it.

A movie done with great sensitivity and realism. The opening does a great job in giving the movie the appropriate placement from an historical perspective. It seems to follow closely the accounts I have read of the mission. It provides the viewer a vivid picture of the enemy we were fighting. Perhaps it was many years after the event but nevertheless it brought honor and recognition to those involved. It also served to bring light to others who have been lost in time; our brave POWs; the Filipino underground; the gallant Filipino soldiers who fought with us and helped us battle an enemy not willing to surrender. I am not concerned about character development or the customary aspecys of movies critics center attention on. This was a patriotic movie that brought honor to all who served. I left the theater with tears in my eyes and a renewed feeling of patriotism. It provides a strong message to all of us during these turbulent times. It showed the resolve and strength of Americans and their abilitiy to overcome the impossible and WIN. Kudos to John Dahl, Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro for putting together a movie of significance. A movie with a message. Thank you for allowing us to understand what took place over 60 years ago and bringing honor and praise to a brave group of men who went beyond the limits. Youd did a fantaastic job. [...]

Is this like Saving Private Ryan, but on a larger scale? Yes and no. The aim, to rescue otherwise doomed POWs, is not unlike trying to save Pt. Ryan. Saving Private Ryan was a superior film, ironically, with a much stronger emotional impact, even though that film was about rescuing one person. Also, The Great Raid is not as good as the 1957 classic film Bridge on the River Kwai, which has similar subject matter. The Great Raid has too many slow moving parts and not enough character development. No one person stood out as the protagonist. It's not the landmark film that it set out to be. The film was supposed to be released first in 2003, then in 2004, but it was delayed by the disolution of the Disney-Miramax partnership. With the lack of advertising, I believe Miramax doesn't believe in this film. Opens August 12, 2005.

This must be an updated version of the "longest day movie". it simply tells a great camaraderie of americans and filipinos. Avoid the dirty political antics, don't project prejudices on americans. This movie simply lies on pure heroism.

Great movie, good storyline, personally I would say its almost as good as Windtalkers. The story line isnt as fast paced as other action/war movies, for me, 20 minutes was needed before the story can be fully appreciated. Intresting story, wonderful effects.

A graphicly violent movie which shows the horrors of Japanese POW camps. This movie is based on a true story which enhances the suspense and drama.

Just went last night to the première of The Great Raid with my cousin, from what I read in the paper it was suppose to be very graphic violence, this of course was probably to juice up the box office, because compare to Black Hawk Down and Saving Private Ryan, this is for teenagers, you don't really see the gory scene where a guy guts are hanging out, which is good, the story is great, just that you don't seem to care for the characters, and there is also a romantic side to the story for the girls, but you don't really seem to care, they should of made flashback of them actually being together, so at least we actually have feeling for this couple. But for the story line which is bases on a true story it's very good compared to other war movie, just the acting could of been or more the screenplay could of been better, because I find Joseph Fiennes is the best in this one.
