A movie doesn't have to be pallid and cold in order to express the new life that young Chinese urbanites face. If you want the same theme (that theme being 20somethings growing up and trying to adapt to their civilization as adults) but obviously executed far better, try Garden State.

A movie far better than any Hollywood film. It can be seen as an experimental piece by a young Chinese director. Whether you like it or not, it shows the reality, the underside of an emerging city. While Westerners impose globalized market economy in other parts of the world, the Chinese creates their version of the world, a world of fakes, a world of surface glories above a pond of social issues. It is a world in a pot, a vivid irony to criticize the Chinese universe in the story of several ordinary characters in the system of promoting fake reality. The tone is meant to be mundane and slow, because that is a reflection of reality, not mere visual excitments or vibrant sensations. It's about normal life of a few individuals afterall. Most professional film commentators have given great comments on this film, I totally agree with them.

Complex narrative? What a load of crap! This movie was excruciatingly long and dull, with too many two-dimensional characters that I cared little about, not the least of which was the lead actress, who started the film with an annoying shrill chant and whose character only got more obtuse as the film progressed. The tremendous potential of the settings, both visually and metaphorically, was sadly under-utilised and much of the film was reduced to the same few repetitive camera shots over and over again - oppressive and bleak... I GET IT! The only reason I stayed until the end was to see if anything would redeem the 2.5 hours it stole from me... it didn't. Self indulgent 'faux-art'.

A movie for all people. Whether you agree with its' message or not, the movie itself is beautiful.

A poignant sketch on the dark side of China's fast growing economy. The pace may be somewhat slower than what Westerners are used to, but a very good film nonetheless.
