I think I saw this back in 2005 but noticed that it received a U. S. theatrical release in February 2008 so I wanted to write a review. Based on the secret airlift in 1985 of thousands of Ethiopian Jews into Israel, this movie is about one fictional boy's dramatic story of survival, adaptation and, ultimately, identity. This film is definitely worthy of attention. Still one of the only movies where I'm left undecided if it was too long or too short. I really can't decide if this is a 8 or 9 out-of-ten movie. I haven't seen it in so long. I remember it being really powerful and terrifying in some places but it didn't make my top ten for the year so I assume it's a 8/10 movie. Anyway, it's most definitely worth seeing.

Saw it at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Favourite of the fest, and it won audience choice award. Unbelievable.

Very interesting the way it begins and closes. I think the actors are superb, in the 3 phases of the character's life. Extraordinary!

The movies was done very well. It showed the pain in these people's hearts, their struggles, and also it educated us in their national culture. The love story was beautiful and also the scenery in israel. Thank you, Radu Mihaileanu and anyone else invovlved in making the movie.

Although it was lengthy and the last shot was unrealistic, it was a really emotionally gripping film, a worthwhile experience, and very well done on the whole!

Thank goodness for worthy film directors! It's worth checking out the official website for some background on the Ethiopian actors (if you read French... )

Moving, informative, challenging. I thoroughly 'enjoyed' the messages/issues that this movie presented.

The Ultimate of sacrifices... The clash of third world vs modern world and then the Clash of "Religions".. If this is not enough... how about the Race card? "Blacks" not being welcomed by a white society! Nothing is left out. A truely Great Movie! Highly recommended.

This movie is so well crafted. Timing is excellent with pulling you into the child's world of confusion and bewilderment. The bright light shone on racial prejudice and inter-racial marriage is well executed without being preachy. Would love to see this one in the big theatres.

As a returned volunteer worker in Ethiopia, I was delighted to know more about that period where everyone was so uncertain about their future (and it's not a whole lot better now) and the love of a mother for her child - so strong that she sends him away. A sensitive and fascinating look at another aspect of modern life.

One of the most complete films of acting, directing and scriptual brilliance. To be truthful to oneself foces us to understand the wreching loneliness of a mother's sacrifice. Amazing accomplishment!

Very good movie, interesting subject, good acting, anybody with a soul would get touched by it. About 20 minutes longer than it shoud be, two hours would be plenty. An important point is that one cannot escape the irony of a historical parallel beetwen the Nazi times, when Jews escaping certain death were hiding their identity in an attempt to save their lives and a few decades later, non Jews, escaping from equally certain death and misery had to hide their non Jewish origin. The rational of the State of Israel in scrutinizing the would be newcomers is clear both politically and historically, but compassion must overtake those considerations. [...]

This is one of the most powerful and beautiful movies I've ever seen. It's emotionally wrenching though so don't see it if you want something light!

Brilliant movie! The Director and his actors capture the psychological and emotional characteristics of each person in the film with brilliance and accuracy. From racism to human suffering, the film touched upon everything it needed to touch on. The end scene was so heartfelt that it took me awhile to come our of the trance I was in. A must see - I have recommended it to all my friends.

So many themes wrapped so seemlessly into one very well made and thought provoking movie. A story I knew very little about, but which has helped me understand the Middle East better. Very worthwhile.

A Masterpiece indeed! It would be awesome if in addition to his talent for moviemaking, Radu Mihaileanu would close some more contracts here so we can see more of his movies on the big screen in North America. And Yael Abecassis is simply Amazing... To me, an actress at least twice as appealing than the most favorite ones these days (eg. Zeta Jones, M Bellucci) The movie really has something to say and can be seen again and again. [...]

I simply loved this movie! The most wonderful one that I've seen for many years. Why? Because it is beautifully humane. It shows that the path to wiseness is love, a love that is given with no afterthoughts or strings attached. It shows how much we are all of the same familly, be it that we are white, black or red (yellow and light brown as well), Jews, Christians or Muslims (as well as any other) I would like to see more movies like this one, that brings hopes for a happier and better future.

This movie is truly a masterpiece. The acting is among the best I've seen in a very long time; truly heartfelt and sincere to the point that you forget that you're watching a film. It feels like you're intruding into people's real lives. This is, in my opinion, the best movie of the year.
