I've watched it over and over. It's the actors that make the movie worth while.

I went with my sister and in the first 5 minutes, if not less I knew I would be bored to tears... and we both were!! I could not believe that some of those actors would participate in such a movie... disappointed!!

Actually it turned out all right. I've listened to PHC for many years, and it translated faithfully to the screen, with the added "backstage" stuff to make it much more involving. The one thing that surprised me was having Kevin Kline play Guy Noir instead of Garrison Keillor. Yes, yes, I know... Garrison had too much to do with "running the show" to be wandering around in a role that was a main thread for the movie. The logistics would have been impossible, but it took me a few minutes of exposure to reconcile myself to it... On the whole, well worth seeing...

Good moments here and there, but not an Altman masterpiece. Some of the music sequences are indeed great, and the performances of Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin may make you wish the movie was more about them. Kevin Kline's character mystified me, and he didn't seem to be able to make that much out him. However, if you're an Altman devotee, go to the film and savour the usual cast of many characters, the overlapping dialogue, and the genuinely warm, cozy feeling he elicits from the material. Just don't expect Nashville.

I saw the film last night, and I am still shaken to the core. A masterpiece. The film is not "about" old-time music or radio. The themes are deep... some viewers seem to not be able to "get" the point. If you are a thoughtful and perceptive person, don't miss this one. Brilliant direction.

An excellent presentation of what we used to call "Cowboy Music." Meryl Streep has a fine singing voice as has Lily Tomlin. The genre was well presented by all the cast. The best film I have seen this summer, the Director should be complimented with an Academy Award.

I am a big fan of natural dialogue and interaction between the cast. Also very pleasing to have a few big names in one film which you rarely see with the days of over paid stars. I thought this was a good film, very introspective and intrigueing. I am not a huge country music fan, but enjoyed the songs as they were deliberately light and silly, poking fun of the norm. Garrison Keillor is brilliant to watch, and since he is doing something that is actually real and his, this is a gem.

Except for a couple very very small parts that were slightly humorous, this movie was boring, dragged out. And the "angel" stuff made me want to through up. I was expecting a lot more and was very disappointed.

Altman's style is slow, touching and poignant. Do not expect high paced antics. This movie is about people, in a situation in one night. Nothing more. He captures their final performance in a way few directors can do. The performances are excellent - Keillor, Streep, Tomlin, Harrelson. Prairie Home Companion should make you thin - what if this were my last night at something I love? Without going over the edge in mushy emotion he captures the friendships and bonds of a small group of B list radio entertainers.

It's interesting, I had trouble rating this one. I looked forward to seeing Garrison again, but as ever he is mostly just a great speaking voice. Lily was great as always, but Streep was different -- a delight. The 'Mama' song near the end is good, and although the show drags a bit it's worth waiting for. The kiss, too."Stand by my side if you love me" brought tears to my eyes, which does not happen often. The angel is an odd tough, but perhaps because it's an era thing when performers looked at the live audience to see how they were doing. Seems a lot warmer than the ratings game of today. Shows still seem to need angels, when shows and show people look 'death' in the face. Shows end with poor reviews, loss of audience, changing times, the landlord's whim -- and performers are always looking for approval. Better an angel than a grim reaper, I suppose. It's a tenuous and unhealthy lifestyle, but the good friendships are heart warming. I was reminded of our part, the audience part, and how we alter reality just by observing.

A pleasant, vanilla experience. The plot, what little there was, was uncompelling and unsatisfying. Some of the characters did not seem to fit the milieu. What was the purpose of the angel, for example? The show about the show on PBS last week was much better as it allowed the audience to enjoy the performers' entire songs/numbers, whereas the movie jumped about on and off Stage seemingly without purpose.

Absolutely wonderful... saw it twice and numerous friends now want to see it but... can't seem to find a nearby theatre that is showing it.

I thought this film to be beautifully crafted. Artistic in every way. There were many moments that I just loved, particularly Meryl Streep and Woody Harrelson. GK has a melodious voice and the pure theatricality was marvelous. But something eluded me. Can't quite put my finger on it, but the film left me vaguely dissatisfied. Hmmm.

One of Altmans finest - a great cast of actors doing what they do best. Meryl Strrep and Woody Harrelson were standouts. If you remember radio dont miss it..

I really enjoyed the music and the little bit of suspense... a little weak in the directing but overall a good movie.

Altman's humanism is a warm and welcome antidote to the animated effects-heavy cartoons on every other big screen. Treat yourself by going to this film.

You will get some laughs but not great entertainment wise. Lot's of chit-chat without much continuity. Great acting by all except for Toomy Lee Jones, he is just plain awful. Not to see, not to rent.
