This is what movies should be about. Great writing, excellent acting, enchanting music, and a pace that makes you completely lose track of time passing. Unfortunately, this movie was quietly released, and deserved much more exposure and press. Ed Norton yet again shows why he is, in my book, one of the best actors, delivering another fine performance. Naomi Watts also delivers a great performance. And these two actors, who also produced the movie, are guided by an excellent script. It's a story of love, infidelity, punishment, stubbornness, and realization. The music score is simply amazing (not surprising that it won the Oscar last year), and some of the cinematography is breathtaking. It's a beautiful movie that reaches out and touches you in so many ways. Truly worth seeing.

Very good movie. The cruelty of this doctor that motivates him to tag along his wife, makes you wonder if you could forgive such this man. This trip that will change their lives for ever in a foreign country with different culture and traditions. Good interpretation from both actors. Sometimes, it seems a bit long.

A very visually beautiful movie. I just couldn't bring myself to feel any sympathy for Naomi Watts' character until the very end. Edward Norton is so underrated, he's one of my favourites of all time.

Exceptional movie, subtle and nuanced performances by Naomi Watts & Edward Norton. Beautiful images, wonderful score. Touching story (some might call it melodramatic)

Well I loved the movie. It was worth watching every minute. The story was touching, especially from the standpoint of the growth of Naomie watt's character. The end is very fitting... It epitomizes her change as a women who fell in love.

Beautiful, touching film. Not predictable as the description might sound. Very realistic and interesting all along. Beautiful scenery. All the actors played their part incredibly well and the characters they play are very relatable, touching, and you feel like you know them in the end as if they were real people. Production and sound are excellent, you really get sucked into this film and forget everything else. Amazing movie all together.

I was thrilled to hear that a work by Summerset Maughm was being made into another film! The shots are gorgeous-like watercolour. The Chinese landscape is captured very successfully. Naomi Watts and Ed Norton give solid performances as usual, but I felt that there was just a little something missing in their chemistry when together. The story is heartbreaking and lovely, and the score compliments the film well. A well-executed film overall, and well worth the time and money spent to see it.

Very good movie. Has a little bit of everything (action, drama, romance, foreign, gore) Will suit any audience. Have to really pay attention to follow complete story line. Has some really nice nude shots of Edward Norton... one butt shot... never though he looked that good... perhaps was a body double?

I saw this movie about a month ago and I have delayed my response because I wasn't sure why this movie struck me, got under my skin... It is true that Maugham doesn't exactly depict the perfect "romance" or ideal marriage between Norton & Watts, but you cannot deny that their preformances were brilliant... Norton is the new Hottie Nerd and his acting skill and his carefully chosen roles are what have catapulted him to star status... He unlike some can survive past the good looks & I think he will have a brilliantly long carreer... The dialogue is not always kind, the images not always pretty but there is a depth of emotion that you feel at the end of it all that leaves you scratching your head... I really enjoyed this film & the scenery of the Chinese countryside is beautiful.

I love this movie. The story was well written and it is very true to Chinese history during the colonization era. Edward Norton and Naomi Watts put on a fantastic performance. The movie is shot mostly at the countryside or remote areas of China where tourists are difficult to get to, so just watching the scenery in this movie is worth the money.

For the less discriminated I could see that this movie may be rather acceptable and perhaps, stretching it, a little exciting... for those who lead a rather dull life. The plot was basically thin as onion paper and the overall mood was mono tonal with the very odd diversion to something more lively. Again, for those who were blown away with this movie and gave it a 10 or so, boy do you need to upgrade your life.

A beautifully filmed movie that follows a British couple through their marital difficulties amid turbulent times in China during the era of British colonialism. What is remarkable in this movie is how authentically the characters grow, react and try to overcome the difficulties of their relationship. If you like relationship movies this film will definitely appeal to you - the feelings of the two main characters (husband and wife) are well portrayed. The dialogue is above average and the film gets progressively better as the story develops. An excellent and feeling rendition of Somerset Maugham's 'Painted Veil'.

A very good romantic drama set in a beautiful Chinese countryside in an era not too long past. Naomi Watts & Edward Norton are excellent in their respective role. There is something to be learned about love in this one, do see.

I thought this would be quite a high-minded, arty movie; but really, I felt it fell short of any lofty intentions. The cinematography and scenery were beautiful, and the actors talented and nice. But I never felt emotionally or intellectually engaged by what they were going through, or anything else that was going on. Much ado about nothing!

The Painted Veil treats viewers to the beautiful and peculiar mountainous landscapes of rural China and its people’s quaint old ways through Western perspective. It is also beautifully and poignantly scored. The mysterious tune in the house party scene and the angelic young voices of French parting song were particularly poignant. The script has been spared of acute imperialistic certitude prevalent in many of Maugham’s novels and short stories. However, not of a sad cliche, the sole notable Chinese female character in the film being a very young exotic long-haired nubile woman as an intellectually light weight companion to an Englishman. It is a love story, a study of a marriage between an intelligent but romantically inept young British bacteriologist and his flippant and aimless bride who marries him in order to leave her unloving mother, respectively played by Edward Norton and Naomi Watts. The couple barely knows one another at the time of marriage. Through their journey from London to vibrant Shanghai and to the centre of cholera epidemic in the Chinese interior, they face disillusionment, betrayal, hate, terrible struggle and finally finds love. Edward Norton yet again showed us how versatile an actor he is. He has been admired by many since his first feature film appearance in Primal Fear as a cool and latently violent psychotic murderer hiding behind a mask of a stuttering alter boy with a fragmented mind. Performance by Naomi Watts as Kitty opposite Edward Norton was very moving. The film, produced by the two starring actors is as fine as any romantic epic in recent years though not as lavishly produced and marketed as, say, the English Patient. Noticeably, though, Edward Norton has been tirelessly giving interviews in an effort to promote the film. Kcc..

I totally loved this movie. Cinematography was superb. I thought the story line was interesting. I did NOT find the film too slow but was actually amazed that it passed so quickly - perhaps I was mesmerized with the great acting. Well-cast, well-shot, and well-enjoyed by me and my friend. I'd see it again...

I found the only thing that saved the movie was beautiful cinematography. That was breath-taking. This movie did not draw me into the characters enough to care about them. Not rated as one of my favorites.

The scenery may be beautiful but the movie is not! It's missing depth and character development. Although Norton does a nice job with this role it's not an oscar winning performance by any means and he doesn't really fit the part well. I was disappointed. I think this could have been so much more. It has the makings of a beautiful story of a journey of self discovery and the meaning of true love but it fails miserably... you want a great love story, see the English Patient... that is a masterpiece, this is a rental at best and only when your first choice is not available!
