De Palma is the problem. The actors are all capable. The ship effects and sets were amazing. Apparently, the original script was better, but uneven (according to creative screenwriting mag. ) People feel strongly about this movie because they WANT to feel excited about going to Mars. This felt flat and hokey and derivative. Too bad, cause the "Don Cheadle sees ghosts" scene was sheer genius. (In fact, I gave up writing my "Mars" script after I saw this and Red Planet-which was a bit better) If you look at any of the "going to the moon or mars flicks of the 50s and sixties-this movie seems like a work of art. -I guess we live in "interesting times"!

Much better than these reviews give it. A very good but not great sci-fi.

"Mission to Mars" seems to infuriate a lot of people for some reason. Brian DePalma is usually given very high ratings as a filmmaker. So what happened here? I personally loved this movie, with its homage to Kubrick's "2001," and its emphasis on good feeling between some very pleasant and heroic characters, and its anxiety about a vague threat to the human race that has something to do with our carelessness about technology. It also has some fascinating speculations about history and evolution. I wonder if anyone noticed how women are very important in it, although definitely some leading character could have been a woman other than the Goddess personified in the later virtual reality sequence. But I think it's still great for a DePalma movie as compared with maybe "Carrie" and "Dressed to Kill, " and even "BlowOut, " where women meet with disaster.

I just love this movie! Phil (Jerry OConnell) is #1 in the film (plus he is hot.) I like the part where they have to abandon the ship.

YAWN! Oh my God! Did the producer take the time to view what he had just filmed!? I have never had such a difficult time trying to stay awake! And, talk about corny! This film can make a monk barf! Save your money folks; don't support your local retarded-films association!

An excellent film. That's all I can say. No it is not an action film or a sci-fi thriller - It was not meant to be one either!

I usually avoid bad movies but I got sucked into this one, hook, line and sinker! I think the documentary making of this movie would be very interesting because I'd really like to know how they screwed up this concept. I mean this movie had everything going for it and I for one was hoping for another 2001 but WOW, how did it turn out so bad!! I mean I couldn't make a movie this bad if I tried!! There must be a conspiracy to get De Palma out of the movie business because he's made some damn good movies in the past. The only thing more stupifying is that people are giving this movie 9's and 10's? HELLO McFly!!!
