[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] Fabulous camera work, some good acting, bad and rather unhistorical script. One question: Why would they've needed Geismar to get to Lena's husband when they had Tully already? That pretty much sums it up why the film doesn't come even close to the 'Third Man' or 'Casablanca' or the 'Man That Came In From The Cold' (to stay in black & white format) It remains that Welles, Bogart or Burton are tough to match, Mr. Clooney, I agree on that. Nice try though.

DON'T WAIST YOUR TIME OT MONEY... I like the black & white it has a Cassablanca fell to it but the movies is long and confusing with no action in it. I left and hour and half into it without watching the ending while other people left left then an hour into the movie.

We were 4 people in the theatre and 2 of us were sleeping. Good movie to go see if you plan on fooling around... or you're an insomniac.

Stay away from this boring and useless movie... with almost no action no drama and confusing story that I couldn't care less about. [...] I had free tickets to the premier. (0 out of 10)

I love black and white movies. And this is not a bad one at all. However, who was the [...] that did the casting for the role of Lena? Cate Blanchett's "German" accent was absolutely ridiculous, this is not at all what Germans sound like. Terrible. They could have found tons of German actresses that could have done what Cate Blanchett did regarding the acting - and with fluent German. I usually like her, but this performance was simply awful. The rest of the cast did a decent job, and the story itself is rather interesting. But still, something was missing to make this a really good movie.

It's a great movie with great actors. You have to follow the story from the beginning to the end to understand everything.

I find it hard to believe that Sonderbergh used strictly the techniques and equipment of the past, but that then the dialogue was full of expletives and that there is a sex scene in the beginning reminiscent of modern movies. I don't care but that incongruity really stood out. Blanchett was overly dramatic, and Clooney was wooden with her, despite the fact that supposedly they had been lovers before the war. Cate's German pronunciation was quite goog however. A twist on the usual German scientist story.

I thought that it was wonderful. I lived through the 2nd World War, and I thought that it was very typical of a lot that was going on when the Americans joined in.

Great flick. Though there was big name actors, they didn't seem hollywoodized, just some good acting. I didn't know what to expect, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Steven Soderbergh's Direction is, as always, visually exciting. So is George Clooney. Stop there, a clip of the smile will do. While broken German may be 'de rigueur' for an American, it will not do for a German-born actor (Lena/Kate) As a Thriller the story has many flaws ( Do snitches really get paid before they deliver the merchandise? ) Not as complicated as Siriana, but drawn with the same Clooney calligraphy. George is not a storyteller. He is a picture.

Well, having done some research recently on film noir, I'd say that 'The Good German' does the style quite succesfully. It was quaint and interesting seeing a black and white flick on the big screen. Cate Blanchett, wonder that she is, plays an intriguing femme fatale without reducing her character to the type; and, it's worhtwhile to see Tobey Maguire being rotten for a change. My one complaint was that George Clooney, despite having the look and attitude down pat, could've had a little more, hmmm -- what's the word? -- variety? Complexity? I don't know... But, the music is fitting and the filming nicely dated (I didn't mind the 'Casablanca'-like shots at all), while still striking. You could wait to rent it, but, as I say, the atmosphere makes it a good big-screener.

I love Cate Blanchett. She was brilliant as ever. It's not a bad movie but certainly not Hollywood style, so I wouldn't recommend it to "everyone." I'm not sure if colour would have made it more interesting or if it would have taken away from its originality. All I know is there was definitely something missing. This is supposed to be a dramatic movie but all the culminating moments were washed out. So was the ending. If they didn't have "The End" written on the screen I wouldn't have guessed. Overall, many actors felt out of place -especially Tobey Maguire.

I was very disappointed in the movie overall. Kate Blanchette was amazing as usual. She saved the movie for me. I found George Clooney's character to be absolutely unbelievable. I think he did too as he was stilted in the part. It was like watching a movie from the 50's with all the flaws... overly dramatic music and all..

Great looking film with some problems, the main one being that I was unable to develop any feelings good or bad for Lena.
