Very good, but I don't recommend it to kids or anyone who doesn't like gore. It was very sad, but it had great acting and will probably be nominated for an oscar.

Great performances by 2 of the best actors around today yet... there was something missing... the movie didnt grab me and keep me interested... worth renting but nothing more.

I had just read the book before watching this movie and I just couldn't get into the movie since they changed a lot of things from the book (a true story shouldn't be changed) Anyhow, the acting was okay, but it was nothing like I envisioned it while reading the book. Foxx did a pretty good job though in his role as a schizophrenic. I recommend the book!

I would give it a (7.9).. 2 of the best actors I like... base on a true story... for some people it seems that the movie was too long and had some long boring parts.. but it helped me followed the movie and get the rythme. It's not an action movie or an comedy... it's a drama... and it describe real life in it... it shows how different people live... the music is unbelievable... It tries to make people understand schizophrenia.

Excellent movie. Wasn't what I was expecting, it was more... Jamie F. And Robert D. Excellent... it taught me alot about mental illness and respect for the homeless.

Well done. Jamie Fox should get an Oscar for his role. It taught us a lot about mental illness. We learned about accepting people as they are, and letting friendship be the main goal. Street people were portrayed as humans, and worthy of our compassion. Music was good. A great movie overall, that makes you reflect on life after you've seen it.

I put off seeing this movie - so I wasn't prepared to like it as much as I did. It is a really good movie with a powerful message of accepting people as they are... not as we would like them to be. While I found the movie long, it kept my attention.

Had so much potential where did it go wrong? Was so excited to hear some great cello pieces - both the music and this movie went down the drain. Great actors - such a waste.

An excellent movie. However, if you enjoy action movie that never stop from beginning to end, I would not suggest it to you. Otherwise, a must-see!!!

"The fact of the matter was that he was simply a very far-gone desert rat. I felt naive and middle-class for having hoped--even briefly--that I could bond with the unbondable, for thinking that all it takes to make crazy people uncrazy is a little bit of hearty attention and good sense... And then I felt sad because I realized that once people are broken in certain ways, they can't ever be fixed, and this is something nobody ever tells you when you are young and it never fails to surprise you as you grow older as you see the people in your life break one by one. You wonder when your turn is going to be, or if it's already happened." --- Douglas Coupland LIFE AFTER GOD --- That's exactly how I felt after this movie. What an amazing performance! What a painful heart flipping and hopeful soul searching story! A time and money well spent for me. A definite must see!

This picture is a perfect example on how a very week script and an excessively corny direction can ruin an excellent story and the work of two superb actors. It is not a total waste of time but you could wait to rent the DVD.

Just like the book, this movie is a work of art. Some parts were not as strongly demonstrated as I expected, however, overall it was great. This is a film for all genres and all ages, it's a beautiful story that tells the truth about life.

I was almost going to rate this 6, but after thinking a little more I gave it a 7. BTW, people should read the actual rating comment... I have never given anything higher than 8, and lower than 6 (probably because I know what ones to stay away from *knock on wood*) I think people throw around the 1's and 10's much too often. Being entertained doesn't mean you give it an automatic 10. Anyway... this one did have me glancing at the watch a couple of times (in fact I had to give the wife an elbow 1/2 way through and she was the one that had wanted to see this one for 5 weeks) It had it's moments. It wasn't the most riveting story ever, but if you are a fan of Beethoven.. you'll probably like the music.

Two great actors plus a great script plus great direction equals a GREAT MOVIE. And this is what The Soloist is : A GREAT MOVIE. Just when you think there is mostly junk out there in movieland, a wonderful flick comes along to restore a little faith in the business of making movies. Of course you can't go wong with Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr., can you?

This movie portrays yet another side of life most of us do not have any knowledge or information about. You often wonder how someone becomes homeless and the sad reality behind it is all to real. The acting is deep and focused. The movie is moving and should not be missed.

Loved the humanity of this movie. The main actor showed such inspiring patience with a mentally ill person and could see beyond his illness and also put himself in harms way! So Kudos to the man that did this since it is a true story.

Glad they made this true story into a movie because it offers a window into homelessness and mental illness. It's sad that so many people with mental illnesses end up on the street. In terms of how the movie was done, I would give the acting an 8 and the directing a 6.

I once heard that in the East it is believed that if you save someone's life, you are responsible for them for the rest of their life. I think this isn't a commandment so much as simply an observation of the way life and human nature work. To ignore someone in need is callous; yet by helping that person you may need to follow it through to the end or you risk doing more harm than good. Yet too much helping may not be in anyone's best interest either. This movie shows one exploration of this dilemma and the personal transformations that two (real) people went through as a result (played by Downey and Foxx) I was very moved by the story, which shows a frighteningly realistic view of people who have fallen through the gaps in society's social safety net. (There but for the grace of God...) Yet, somehow the movie failed to lift me completely off the ground, and I'm not quite sure why. I thought the special effects that showed the subjectivity of psychosis were very convincing -- a bit overdone at times, but it gave me a better sense of what it must be like to experience that. And I had a clearer sense of how mental illness does not define a person, who is still a whole person despite being partly eclipsed by it. And I could see how easily one can get caught up in the good intentions of helping someone, yet overlook the basic respect, dignity and human connection that even the most needy or "wretched" of us has the right to receive. I wished they had used recordings of the real Nathaniel Ayers' playing; as far as I could see from the credits, they didn't. I have long thought Robert Downey Jr was an extremely talented actor, although in this film he seemed to mumble a lot and spoke so quickly or softly that I often missed what he was saying. As a result, some of the background behind the foreground story didn't really filter in for me until later in the film. Nevertheless, I think the story and film are well worth experiencing. It IS a feel-good movie, albeit with a bitter sweet flavour.

The script could have been slightly better written, but the message is sound. Jamie Foxx is amazing in this movie, and the spotlight on the homeless is exceptional in the genre. The music brought me to tears in places. Downey Jr. was good, but a better script would have made his responses even better. I'm giving this a 10 for concept.

Ham handed handling of what is supposed to be sensitive. Director beats us over the head with images. We get it! Be sad, now, Be uplifted , now... And why must Robert Downey Junior- playing a well paid respected journalist always look like a scabby (literally for half the movie) bum in every situation. The whole love interest track is distracting and Hollywood cornball.

Worst movie I have EVER seen! It's the first time since I came into this country that makes me want to get out my seat while I only watched for about 30 minutes! Don't go to watch it! It's not a so-called inspirational movie or anything like that. I just didn't see the point of even filming it! Bad Bad Bad movie.

A piece of crap. The movie isn't even capable of telling a complete story. Too much time is wasted on the crazy man's mumbling. Don't think Steve's way is a good way to help homeless people. Focusing on one person isn't gonna make much difference.

The movie dragged on and on and on. It could have been done in 1/2 hour instead of almost 2 hours. If it was on tv I would change the channel and would even prefer to watch advertisements. The ending wasn't an ending nor was it a beginning to a sequel. There have only been a few movies I have ever gone to that I felt extremely disappointed in and this one made me mad that I wasted 2 hours of my Saturday.

Even this is a real story. Is this the best solution or a good enough for all the homeless people? I have doubt of using single case to represent the general bright-side of the world. On the other hand, this movie shows a realistic nature of homeless people co-existing with pervasive psychiatric problems. Why the journalist does not realize that he will not be able to recover his talent-rejected friend backing onto stage? For sure, he is not a doctor. Passion is not a solution, but passion is definitely one of the best approachs. The same social issue could be easily seen in Montreal street. It is brave to reveal the problem. But where is the solution for everyone? Do you need to have talents to be pityed? Seriouly, dude.

I really enjoyed this one, it's surely one of my favourites. It was quite powerful, and yes, touching. Really wish to see it again. And yes, the music itself was awe-inspiring. (This movie was a nice break from the mindless action I usually watch, heh heh)

The reality of the movie based on what is really happening to people even if you have it all is touching and it's interesting how one's life can make you think and give you the need to change something to make it better even though, it would be as simple as just to be there, be a friend... I just felt like I was waiting for something more to happen during the blooming of the events...

Heart touching drama, portraying the trials of those afflicted with mental illnesses. The musical backlog and wasted talent was quite gut wrenching. Great acting by Jamie Fox and Robert Downey Jr. both. Should be considered in next year's Oscars awards.

A masterpiece I found that the movie was verry touching my date actually cried at the end but its true though its hard to see what its like to live in those kind of conditions I was surprised that that their were 90000 homeless people in greater los angeles I think thats it's a reality check that people who actually have the money and the educatioon should take the time to realize how lucky they really are.
