Yikes, what a horrible film! You would think with an A list cast the movie would at least hold your interest... but it doesn't! I felt there was not much substance to this film; even the songs didn't seem to fit into the film. Overall, it was easily one of the worst films I have seen in a long time.

The good news is that the musical numbers were really good (I especially like Fergie's number!), and the cast was great. The bad news is that that wasn't much of a story. Such a shame because this movie had a LOT of potential!!

Slow at times but overall a really good movie. The music was entertaining and at time I felt like getting up and singing along with the actors and actresses. If you like musicals I suggest you watch this movie. Always nicer on the big screen.

Ok, so it's not Chicago. Well guess what. Nine never was. The story does not have the dept Chicago has I agree, but no one can argue that, as simple as it is, it is still a beautiful story. And I dare anyone to argue that Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, Marion Cotilliard and Kate Hudson (yes yes her too) are not a treat to see AND listen to! Come on! Who doesn't want to see Marion Cottilliard give one of the best dramatic rendering of a heartbroken woman WHILE stripping and singing? Or Judi Dench play with a french accent? Kate Hudson shaking what her fantastic mother gave her? And simply see Sophia Loren back on the big screen since 2004? I dare you... who?

Wow! It took me a couple of hours to climb down off my inner scaffolding and stop trying to “be Italian.” Every scene advanced Guido’s story of writer’s block, driven by stunning fantasy musical numbers. While this film is not for everyone, it completely worked for me. The childlike phantasmagorical sensibilities mirrored Guido’s own approach to life. I particularly enjoyed his boyhood influences and the final reference to his inner child, suggesting the guidance it would provide to the new project. Sweet touch.

I was looking forward to this movie since I enjoyed Rob Marshall's film Chicago and the cast was stellar. But I was very disappointed... a very boring movie with no plot, mediocre songs and flat musical staging. I fell asleep about 30 minutes into it. Avoid this movie at all costs.

Pleasantly surprised as some reviews are negative. I loved it as did my friend. The musical numbers were awesome and well performed by all, the music flowed throughout the movie... Daniel Day Lewis is excellent, very believable... body language artfully expressed emotions... wow performance. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone...

I loved the performances of these actors, Kate Hudson adorable as always, Fergie, surprisingly good, Marion Coutillard, did an amazing and sizzling performance... lets not forget about Dame Judy, please always give her roles like these!!! You are right the storyline is a bit fragmented, Stiill, what remains is the wild desire to tramp around the livingroom, belting out the songs, wishing I was 1/2 as good as any one of these performers so... I will go again, just to be so happily engrossed.

If you love Musicals, choregraphy and art direction were present. Cinema Italiano was the best performance, as well as Fergie's stunning show. Disagree with most comments for this film when comparing it to 8 1/2. Who the hell cares about a musical director and his flings? There was no story line. Agree Chicago had a more interesting plot and memorable songs. But to say it is a waste of time or money is unfair. It is a successful film as far as a musical is concerned; I would have gladly given a 10 if there was a story attached to it. Lewis is not the type of actor who would 'sing' after all his impressive movies. Cotillard's acting was great, Kidman barely made her presence. Loren was just a guest in this movie, no acting. It seemed to me that each scene was made to be ahead of the other without a true link to the story, if any.

At the beginning of the movie I thought "Okay, maybe it will pick up further in" but I found myself ready to leave after 30 minutes. I left and asked for my money back. I would not recommend this movie to anyone and would advise people not go to go see it unless they feel like having a nap.

I had big hopes for this one, but was sorely disappointed. Firstly I am a huge Fellini fan and watched 8 1/2 before seeing Nine. Maybe I shouldn't have done that because Nine only shares superficial story points with 8 1/2. I loved Chicago and was disappointed with Marshal's directions. While its got a great case, none of them can sing. Story dragged at points and the acting just wasn't up to the story Fellini originally wrote, which is still highly watchable and relatable, 50+ years later. Rent 8 1/2, but ship Nine altogether.

The task was made easy to pick the worst for 2009 when NINE was released. Totally inept and ill conceived and the worst for a musical : boring! Where people find profound in this stinker is a mystery. And all those great actresses running around headless and Daniel-Day's Guido who sounds more like Dimitri... Poor Fellini, well it can't hurt too much from where he lies.

The acting was fantastic, the story was thin. Gorgeous to look at in every way: cinematography, costumes, sets, lighting, sound - perfect. Storyline was dull and Fellini's 8 1/2 shouldn't have been the reason to do this picture although that is surely how it got made and what the actors saw in the script. Eye and ear candy, but not interesting beyond that.

I was shocked to find (as a hard-core fan of Daniel Day-Lewis) that he accepted this movie after There Will Be Blood, My Left Foot, In the name of the father and Gangs of New York!! The movie has no script like its protagonist. The movie was all fluff and froth, nothing in there was of substance. One even wonders why all the money was spent, such time wasted when these A-class actors could have engaged themselves in projects more worthy of their stature. Shocking, utterly!

The best film I have seen since IL DIVO. A great adaptation of Fellini's 8½. Outstanding performances of all except for Nicole Kidman, which I found uninteresting, and weak. I hope her role was not reminiscent of Anita Eckberg, if so it was a flop. Soundtrack, scenes brought me back in the 70s when we used to go to PVM cinema to watch and enjoy Fellinis' films... nostalgia...Will rent the DVD and look at it again with great pleasure.

If I were to take into account all the mediocre reviews of this film on this website, I probably wouldn't have gone to see this film. However, if you like musicals & you have some knowledge of Italy & Fellini in the 60's, then you will probably enjoy this film. I'm glad I saw it & I loved it. Daniel Day-Lewis was in his element & all the musical numbers were great. The actresses were sensational (Nicole Kidman, Marilon Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Fergie, Kate Hudson) in thier small but pertinent roles as the women in Guidos' life. It was great to see the great Sophia Loren on screen as his mother. The blend of past & present helped us understand Guido a little more & made him alittle more sympathetic to us as the film went on. I'm really happy I went to this this movie & I encourage others to see it & not let what other people rated it stop them from seeing a great movie!

A different theatrical experience! The big name actresses such as Sophia Loren, Penelope Cruise, Nicole Kidman and Fergie were captivating in their dazzling performances as was Guido in his melancholy demise. The maestro's body language depicted his unhappiness and deceitfullness. The whole scene was chaotic. I felt as though there was a missing element somewhere in the story line. It did end however with some significance. Bravo Guido, better late than never.

Musical Drama, like Western or Thriller, is a genre that builds on formulaic stories. The trick is to create excitement and inspiration from within the confines of a) Music and dance and b) drama. So lets talk about NINE in these regards. A) the original broadway score is at best serviceable and the additional film score is negligible. The dance choreography is unfortunately a lazy exercise of music-video style chaotic cutting to camouflage as dance. B) The marketing coup of casting all these Hollywood A-list talents, ( Oscar winners or red hot stars) will sure ring in some box-office. But by merely dolling them up, striking various dramatic poses in nostalgic Continental setting can’t hide the fact that the dramatic arcs are sorely missing. The actors are underused and their chaotic musical chair appearance is a testament that money might make NINE “watchable” but can’t make up for the lack of integrity and creativity of the filmmakers.

Some of the songs were good (Hudson's number especially), but Day Lewis didn't properly channel his role. He needed to lie with fervor and self-belief, not guilty evasion. I mean, if he's that guilty, why is he throwing away his marriage?

I loved Chicago- but hated this pointless waste of time. The all star cast was squandered on this script. The story was boreing and of no interest, and the song and dance numbers were clunky and did not advance the story, they just cut too them to give each star a chance to sing. Spolier alert. The movie is about a director who had no idea for a movie and therefore no script. Sometimes reality copies fiction.

I have read pages of reviews & let me be the first to say that reviews should be written based on knowledge of a given film, it's intent & origins. Love it or hate it, either way Musicals are tough on most people because of a generational thing. I am not saying the young can't appreciate it. Rather that people who know they hate them should refrain from commenting. I don't see horrors because I cannot possibly appreciate the genre and so I also don't criticize them. That being said, Nine is inspired by Federico Fellini's work 812 and many elements are "fidele" to the genre. The actors were for the most part well chosen & their performances were good. Daniel Day Lewis is not a singer this is true, but he doesn't pretend to be. He is not MEANT to be a performer, he represents a reveared iconic movie maker who is tortured by creative impotence. One must then shift and look for emotions in his acting not quality of song & pitch. His facial experssions, pauses, postures prove he is a seasonned professional. (See him in My Left foot & be convinced) Judy Dench is spot on & despite a smaller role makes a significant impact. I loved her! Visually, the movie is stunning. The sets numbers are interesting. What I appreciated most was the emotional "pushpull" you are forced into with alternating LIGHT vs DARK scenes. I found it gripping, adding depth and interest. People criticize the story perhaps because it is too simple, not enough modern day technology. Our new identity means being plugged into electronic devices, unaccustomed to sit patiently and watch an intrigue develop. The story is simply one of the man I mention above, who, in his creative journey, as dismal as it is, is driven by these women, muses who have entered his life. They influence him and drive his creative process. This movie really shows his torturous journey, one consistent with fame & its ultimate price. In the end, every big star has made a flop and the first time is the hardest one for them to digest. I enjoyed this but my opinion comes with an artisitc understanding & a long lived appreciation for the genre. And to think it all started with The sound of Music when I was 4;)

Wow. Not sure I saw the same movie as many of the others here. I am not a musical lover. That said, this caught my attention and captured it for the duration. The greatest part is the fact that ALL the music was pertaining to the angst and mistakes in the leads life. Daniel day lewis is full of uncertainty due to his inability to get a winning movie or fulfill the love of his life's expectations. Dazzlling costumes, very very strong women who tell him exactly what they think. I loved it. Daniel Day Lewis is the greatest living actor; like him or not, he is the star and the rest was dazzling as well. A winner. Not sure what those who fell asleep were watching or expecting. I loved it.

I was highly disappointed. First time ever, I started to feel sleepy at a movie. If I don't get "drawn into" the story or care about what happens to any of the characters, I feel that it was a waste of time and money. They could have sold it as a series of musical video numbers and kept it to under an hour. I found the parade of gorgeous A-list actresses that perform and profess their adoration and lust for the Guido character got repetative and tedious. Nicole Kidman appears near the end of the film for about 15 minutes! Do we really care what this director daydreams about? And I do love D. Day Lewis as an actor btw... ;)

What a way to burn 10 bucks!! Simply the worst movie of any description I have seen in a very very long time. Apparently the producers started with the premise of making a musical and went from there, while the director seemed to follow the story of a lost artistic mind of the title character to a "t". The end is, for me real shame, I don't think they knew how to end it except ACTION.
