User's review

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
"The Pledge" is adapted from the Swiss playwright Durrenmatt drama, a great Existentialist artist, concerned with the most passionate issues affecting the hearts of people in these times. Jack Nicholson's character Jerry Black really cares, and is even more tormented by the plight of children than the actual parents. He assumes full responsibility for their protection. His instinct leads him to discovery of the real murderer, not the framed up American Indian youth who is also a victim. But he is completely isolated, believed by nobody, and the climax proves him right even though he loses his rational mind from suffering, alone in his love for children, the helpless and meek. Nicholson's acting is unbearably intense and powerful.
