"Ring" is a great title. It's the telephone death sentence for the video watchers, it's little Sam's view of the well she was dumped into to die, it's a magnified close-up of an all-seeing eye, and it is like a wedding band joining one in complicity with evil inflicted upon a child. This is a movie that incites people to search within themselves and think about life and morality. Verbinski I believe deftly adapts Nakata's horrific symbolic reflections about Japan's dreadful legacy in world history, victimized in an incredible holocaust. We are given a lot to contemplate here, and Naomi Watts, passionately performing with young David Dorfman, plays a much more heroic charater than her role in Lynch's "Mulholland Drive.".
