I didn't think I'd like this movie but I really did. It's a bit confusing at times and I had to have someone there explaining it to me. But all in all great movie.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] I got the chance to see it on stage in Toronto when I went there on my school's band trip tow years ago. It was BREATHTAKING! Much to my delight, we were able to watch the DVD on the way home the next day. Gerard Butler does a wonderful job of expressing his feelings through the music, and Emmy Rossum, conceited though she may be, was went above and beyond my expectations. I cried at the opera house and I cried during the final scene of the movie. This tale, theater and film alike, is a beautiful tale of a man who falls so in love with a woman that he is willing to kill for her (Bouquet, Piangi, I'm sure a few people died in the fire), and that isn't something you see anymore. Minnie Driver's singing is beautiful and does a great job of telling Erik's story without actually telling his story. On the downside, I had to watch it a few times to actually see Gerard Butler behind the mask (It's his jaw) and I found Carlotta's constant jumping from Italian to English a wee bit very annoying. As well as that, the constant jumps in time made it a tad hard to follow, namely the sudden jump from 'Notes', the day after Christine stars in Hannibal, to 'Il Muto' Which is set in late November, early December. The most beautiful and touching part of the movie, in my mind, is without a doubt the end scene where Raoul places the music box on Christine's grave. If you have seen it, you know what happens next. That part always makes me cry, because it mean that Erik is still out there somewhere, probably still hiding, but that he still cares for Christine.'Do what you like, only free her! Show some compassion! ' 'The world showed no compassion to me! '

Fantastic version of the play! It had captivating and charming music. I loved it way more than the novel, although the play came close to tying the movie. Incredible singing!

After I became obsessed with this movie and memorized all of Emmy Rossum's lines, I went to see the actual musical on stage, and it stunk compared to the movie. I even have a songbook with every song from the movie in it, who sings the song, and a piano accompaniment so I can accompany myself and sing. That's how much I love TPOTO.

The Phantom (Gerard Butler) is so hot that just to see him it is worth seeing the movie. Plus the singers in the movie sang their parts very well. Minnie Driver as Carlotta was hilarious and a great part of the movie also. I fell in love with the music and the characters.

I love this film. The music was great. I definitely prefer Emmy and Gerard over Sarah and Michael. Gerard can express emotions while he sings, sadness, anger... really moving. Michael Crawford, to me isn't that good. Maybe that's because I saw the movie before I heard the old stage versions. But I also love the French version on the DVD. Some songs are better in French. What a beautiful voice Patrick has! DREAMY! But his acting!! Aghh! Same with Emmy, great voice but she can't act either. The only scene I hated Gerard's singing in was "wandering child" he couldn't hit those notes--wince. But the rest was excellent. I give this film a 9. The acting was a little on the bad side, but musically and picture-wise, it's phenomenal. Go buy it! C'est lui, c'est le fantome de l'opera!

Originally I thought that it was a stupid idea to go see this movie when it was out in the theaters because my friends and I were going to the movies, and they chose The Phantom Of The Opera without me getting to say anything about it. But by the time I got out, after the movie finished, I thought it was great! I have to say that this was the best film I have EVER SEEN! I haven't seen the actual musical, like on stage, but I've heard about it, and it sounds like the movie is ALLOT better! *especially due to the effects since it is a movie* Musicals usually are my favourite kinds of movies. Gerard Butler really suited the roll of the Phantom, in the beggining I thought that he was someone else, I never knew that he was Gerard Butler. I've seen him in Tomb Raider, but I think that he's better in the Phantom Of The Opera. The Phantom is my favourite, I feel sorry for him, and seeing that Gerard Butler played the roll of the Phantom, I find it hard to think of the Phantom as ugly, my friend and I think he's hot! =P So basically, I recomend this movie to everyone! So go and BUY it!! I've watched this movie at LEAST 60 times since it came out, and that was just three weeks ago! So watch the movie! Its great! ^. ^.

I'm 19, and although I never saw the actual play The Phantom of the Opera, I heard the story when I was younger (I read about it and saw some tv versions) and since then I have been captivated by the touching story. It is for this reason that I was very excited when the movie came out. I figured if I could not see the play I might as well see the movie and I LOVED IT! (the singing was a little much at first, but then I remembered that the film was a screen adaptation of the play and I was fine afterwards. ) I think that Gerard Butler made a glorious phantom. He was absolutely gorgeous (even though he was playing a guy with a disfigured face. )Acting wise, he did a great job. You could see the pain and torture and love the phantom had for Christine. His performance made you truly sympathize with the Phantom. The role of Christine was pretty good. I mean Emmy Rossum was great for the role beauty wise, but everything else about her performance (acting wise) was'nt excellent (on a scale of 1 to 10, a 6.5)but her singing was very good. Someone mentioned that her vocal talents were non- existant, but remember she was about 18 when she did this and so her voice would not seem as professional as someone much older. Given her age, she did a good job though. Minnie Driver's role as the dramatic opera diva was good acting wise but I agree that having her there as a singer was'nt a good idea(her lip-synching was semi good though) I thought that the musical scores were excellent which shows the sheer genius of Andrew Lloyd Webber and others who wrote them and the scenes were breath taking. The way that the voices in the scenes blended and complemented one another way sheer genius. I liked the movie so much that I not only want it on DVD, but I am also intrigued to see the play.

I have never seen a movie with Gerard Butler before, but this was a masterpiece. In the original movie, the phantom was burnt in a fire. However, in the new one, he had skin infection. In my opinion, this modernized the movie more, and made it more, or less, dramatic. I am not sure if int he original the set director got hung, but in this one, the hanging looked so realistic. The actor that played Christina did a good job of pertraying a soprano opera singer, in which the Phantom falls in love with. Gerard Butler, the phantom, was an amazing singer, and in my opinion, the best actor I have seen in a while. In my opinion, when you first see hime through the mirror with the mask on, I thought he looked like John Travolta. I guess what I am trying to say is that this is a must see movie. I did not give the movie a ten, because I thought it should have been more relavent o the original, although it came close.

I loved this opera so much BUT it should have been left on stage not put in a movie format. It just takes away the whole idea of what an onstage opera/ theatrical performance offers to the people. I didn't watch the film to end, bored out of my wits. I preferr to pay the 100 dollars to see this live than to see a remake in film version. This is not to say the actors did horribly, they were amazing. Guess I'm just the ol' fashion type. What ever happened to going by the real way? So many short cuts for a buck. ($$$) Ughhh!

THIS MOVIE WAS SIMPLY AMAZING! The actors fit their roles like a glove, Gerard Butler was the hottest phantom I have ever seen, and Emmy Rossum is an intense beauty. They were a perfect pair, and their voices entwined in both a rare and absorbing duet. Everything about the movie was authenticly translated from the original musical, yet enhanced by the cinematography, the various angles and depth provided by the freedom of the camera-work. Every scene, prop, and set was filled with irresistable life. The music had the captivating ability to transport you into the heart and soul of the movie, and it completely seduced me. I am purchasing this film the second I can get my hands on it! I recomend that everyone go out and feast on this enthralling decadence of the cinema, which indulges the senses in an unforgettable way!

I agree with the previous comment about sarah brightman. I tend to believe that most of the people seeing this movie are young and do not know the impact that sarah brightman brought to this role. They did a "ok" job but for us who are into acting and music appreciate that this opera could have been a lot better. Too bad that most young people think otherwise...

Wow, that movie was too painful to listen to. If you've ever heard Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford sing as the original Christine and the Phantom, the musical performance (if you can call it that) of the actors in this movie are absolutely horrible. I think I'm going to have nightmares tonight.
