[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] "Lost Highway" is about a man's flight from himself and his inability to succeed in love and marriage to an obviously extraordinary woman. Fred is an introspective artist, a musician, on the brink of madness, and the Mystery Man represents his growing anxiety about the instability of his life and his need to dominate his wife Renee. What he has done to her is symbolized by a dreadful vision he has, equivalent to murder. His guilty sense results in a loss and change of identity and Renee's becoming Alice, companion of evil Mr. Eddy who exploits her and is another double of Fred whom he must destroy to protect her, in his new guise of the more romantic young Pete. All is an elusive maze of Fred's desperation and reaches its height with her vow that whoever he is, nobody will ever possess her.
