A waitress (Renee Zellweger) is dreaming of becoming a nurse. When her husband is murdered, she is in shock and as a result she escapes reality. She now is in love with her favourite soap opera actor (Greg Kinnear). She is convinced that the soap opera is real and goes to L.A. to meet her idol at the hospital where the soap opera take place. She is followed by the drug dealers (Freeman, Rock) who killed her husband.
