I didn't really like how slow this movie was. I found that it was too long and dragged out. I did, however, enjoy the scary moments and the ending was great. Overall though, it was decent.

BULL. The film is NOTHING like the book. 1- the book took place during the 60s 2- there were MANY paranormal events that afflicted the down (the sounds of many babies crying as if in pain, walls bleeding, violent poltergeist activity, people being harassed by unusually tall, thin men in all black, animal mutilations, people suffering from the same night mare. 3- keel NEVER met the creature.

This movie sucked completely. There are BETTER movies out there. Richard Gere wasnt all that "frightened." Save your self a couple of hours and do somthing entertaining, Please DO NOT GO WASTE YOUR TIME. This movie gets a -10 on a scale of 1 to 10.

I think that the film is one of the greats so far and that it should be looked in to more. Because if there is such a thing than it will help people stop deaths.

Not a strong movie - a neet idea - that would make great 45 min TV viewing but not a feature film. Watch an x-files episode instead or if you have a free rental take this home but don't pay to see it.

Awesome movie. Great psychological thriller. This movie for me as it all: good acting, Gere & Linney have a great chemistry, Will Patton puts in a good performance, good story, good plot, good directing, good soundtrack. The soundtrack is a nice change from the usual rock/techno or bland orchestral scores that make the bulk of today's movies. This soundtract beautifuly supports the mood of each scene. The sparse settings of Point Pleasant coupled with the eerie atmosphere helps the viewer feel the isolation and dispair of Gere's character. The slow evolving plot and the buildind suspense reminded me of The Shinning. I saw this movie twice in theatres, bought the soundtrack, and I'll pick up the DVD. If you prefer Alfred Hitchcock, X-Files, or The Shinning to Friday the 13th or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Buy or rent this movie, you won't reget it.

I read alot of science and know alot of science, so I was curious. IF there are other intelligent beings close enough to ever visit earth, I don't think their attempts to communicate w/us would include the emotion 'fear.' Astrochemistry is soon going to tell us if we are common or unique in this universe. Let's wait for the facts. I personally don't believe any aliens have visited Earth. I think it's just folklore.. herd instinct... all that 'stuff'.. similar to bigfoot, lochness, burmuda triangle... Can one 'see' things and get clues of the future. Yes, I think so, but it's more to do w/hyperspace, waves containing information interacting w/our waves... we are just compressed energy... you know. We are wave/particle duality just like a photon... We are an illusion like Einstein said. :) ALL waves seem to carry information. We have w/in us neucleotides that 'read'. Intelligence, to me, is something innate in the universe. And, we humans who have been on Earth for such a short time. If you took Earth's time and put it in an hour... life began at 10 min to 12 and mankind at 1/100th to 12! We are so young and yet have evolved in our intelligence at such a fast rate... give mankind a chance... and the future Will see great things for the phenomena of the universe we are seeing w/such a narrow view at the moment. The movie... is not the best sci fi movie. I vote Bladerunner, Gattaca... The Shining... all better.

I really liked this movies because it was a suspense/mystery type movie. I think it went slow because they had 2 let you know exactly what was going on. I got out of it that maybe the mothman was the death angel because some say the death angel takes the form of your fears and it was really good to me because I like that kind of stuff. Thumbs up and wish they had a continuance to this movie.

I have never seen a movie that took so long for the plot to develop. It was long and not worth seeing... and don't you think that since the movie is about the mothman they would show a picture of him other then the drawings?! I don't recommend it!! It's not even a thriller.

An great movie that should you would think have won an Academey Award. Richard Gere was great in his best role after being in the Jackel. Laura Linney was great but not as good as her Academy Award nominated role in the Truman Show. Will Patton was great in his best role in his life and Debra Messing was good in the Five minutes she was in it for. It was scary in sum bits but it had a good story and also it is based on true events. It is worth paying money for and I Will be the first to buy it on DVD or Video. I saw it yesterday and Will see it again before it leaves cinemas.

I went to this movie not having a clue as to what it was about, and was pleasantly surprised. Right away you know it is going to hold your attention and sets the mood of mystery. Once you hear that it is based on true events you are wondering even further how this could be. The plot became more and more thrilling and suspensful as the story developed. I think Richard Gere was awesome in this!! It really was creepy and made you a little freaked out when leaving the theatre!

I thought this movie was amazing. I like the way the actor protrayed the theme of the unknown. It seem very interesting and in the same time terrfying because it is a true incident. Every time when you hear it being a true incident, it makes people think about our world. I thought it done well, the actors and actress did a good job in doing their role. It was good suspense thrill movie.

I general, the movie captures the audiences attention. It brings out the 4 kinds of suspense in this movie. A.) What is going to happen next? The scene where the wife and the husband got into an accident. B.) Know what, but how does it happen? The scene where the bridge fell... the audience know that there Will be a great disaster but everyone doesnt know until the end C.) Know what, how, but how Will Richard Gere respond to the great disaster. Thats what captured my attention of what Will be his descion when the great disaster comes. D.) What is it that I see happenning? What do I expect the movie ends, considering the incidents that happened already in the movie. I give "The Mothman Prophecies" a 10 for its story and its suspnse throught out the movie. The character's development is not that great.

I think it was very nice movie combined with the fact that it was based on a true story made it quite exciting. Pitiful Debra Messing didn't have a much involved role as I would have wished. I think Rechard Gere was outstanding. I till find it hard to believe it is based on a true story.

Overall, it was a good movie. The main thing that spoiled it for me was the use of Debra Messing. True that the movie grabs you right away, but only because her nose takes up half the screen and you just sit there trying to think of creative ways to hold your hand in front of your face to block her out. Way to many close-ups on her. Richard Gere was excellent as John Klein, and held true to his blink-when-you-think trait. His character seems a little stiff tho, because apart from slowly drifting into insanity, his character seems to stagnate. Laura Linney, as always, was fabulous as the cop. She once again proved that she is one of the best actresses in Hollywood. She played the role with conviction and reality and the chemistry with Gere was a delight. Linney, I'd say, is the reason to see this movie. Will Patton's a crazy man and plays it well ;) The underlying problem I had with this movie (apart from Debra Messing's nose) was the lack of development of the relationship between Gere and Linney. It doesn't have to be blatant, but it could easily and believeably been worked into the storyline. Gere and Linney have something special which would have been nice to see on screen again (see Primal Fear) A few tense moments but nothing spectacular. Acting was well done. Gere gave a great performance but as I said it's Laura Linney that lifts the movie. It's too bad many of her scenes were edited from the final cut. The movie could have easily done without some of the long, long scenes without her that don't really prove anything. The movie seems to slow drastically when she's not on screen. It would be great to see the deleted scenes on the dvd. As far as spooks and scares go, it's not much to look forward to. I agree with Pellington's decision to show the Mothman at brief glimpses (it is a more psychological movie) , but the few scares that were in there, did little to make me jump. Granted, I'm a hard sell for spook-movies but there were probably only two instances that provoked a reaction from the audience. The climax was enticing... the first time. The second time, and every time after, it was much too drawn out and boring. The problem is that if you don't have a deep connection to the characters, you won't give a care abotu the climax. It Will just seem like a long drwan out reason to use special effects. However, if you are realting to the characters, the climax has deep meaning in terms of John's psyche and his "moving on". It's worth the money to see it in the theatre, as I've done many times. If you're looking to see it, don't buy the ticket thinking about a great jump-from-your-seat thriller/horror, you'll be disappointed. It's a more subtle movie than that. Be prepared for lots of dialogue (some sections very unecessary) but hopefully you'll enjoy it, if only for Linney and Gere's performances. This movie tends to stay with you after you leave the theater.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] First Off, too much Richard and not enough Mothman, I would have also liked if the Mothman kicked a little ass now and then but no, it's just Richie's downward spiral into insanity, oh yeah I thought it was really cute how Richmeister played the hero at the end and saved the cops life, awww so what now, he's going to forget his DEAD wife and hook up with her, sure. This movie sucked and I wish I could give it a zero but you know, you can't!!!!

This movie takes the risk of being different from all of the others, and turns out to be truly great. This isn't your standard "chop 'em up" horror movie, and it isn't the regular "shoot 'em up" action. The creators of this movie have a very unique style, which adds a ton of suspense and makes the movie not just a story, but really an experience. It reminds me somewhat of an art film, but done on a larger, more professional level. Throughout the movie there are tons of abstract images, flashes of color, and closeups. It's like every seen of the movie could be printed out and framed as modern photography. On the downside, I did find some of it quite slow, and the movie probably would have been better of shortened by twenty minutes or so. But this only makes it better when the show gets really good later on. The story is absolutely phenomenal, especially because it's based on true events. And it stays quite true to what really happened, it doesn't offer any solutions. When you come out of that theatre, you have no clue what this "mothman" is. Go with some friends, and you'll argue the whole way home- and once you arrive, you'll only have more questions then when you left the theatre. This movie is getting a lot of mixed reviews here because of its somewhat controversial story and style. If you're thinking this is some kind of action movie or you like gore and violence, find another show. But if you want something genuinely scary, and a movie that is different then the rest, go and see this! I will most likely buy this movie on DVD when it comes out, and I might go see it another time in the theatre. It's not your standard show, it's a work of art. Definitely check it out, movies like this are always better in the theatre!

I dont understand why Hollywood insists on replacing quality with cheap animation and sound effects that are meant to shock us into a reaction. In this particular case, if it wasnt for the guests I had with me, and whom I thought were enjoying the film, I would have walked out after 30 minutes. As it turned out, they would have done the same. A definite miss.

The "Mothman Phrophecies" was created on a spectacular, and ellusive true story. This movie was created for the viewer who loves all things paranormal. I researched this movie, to familiarize myself with this particular story so that I could better understand these events. I can not begin to tell you how disappointed I was. I heard that anyone who loves the "X Files", will absolutely love this movie. I truly feel that an hour of the "X-Files" can leave me breathless and pondering the bigger questions of this unniverse, which is why I was so keen to see this movie. This movie basically used the context of this parinormal event to fill the seats for an other wise flimsy romance story. The facts were confussing and the primary characters had no chemistry between them. I truly feel that this movie completely missed all the important supporting eliments to this true story. Characters were introduced left and right, but no further depth was developed with any of them. They basically dropped their "Mothman" experience off at the door and hoped it would some how integrate smoothly into the story line. I felt that each discovery was crudely introduced, and that the primary characters were easily forgotten. The secondary characters and fringe characters had much more mystery and depth to their charcter with out any added development. It really is unfortunate that their characters couldn't have be developed even more in this movie. I strongly believe that if the secondary/fringe characters had been used strongly through out this movie, their involvement would have kept up the much needed intesity, and support for such a confussing story. I think too much time was taken to expose the clues, and that it stripped the audience of the challenge to piece the clues together themselves. I feel the director spent too much time focused on the one person in the viewing audience who might not be able to piece together the movies clues themselves. In conclusion I would like to say that this movie envolves some of the true stories events, and that is probably correct advertising. However, this movie did not leave the viewer fullfilled. It did not effectively portray a strong beginning, middle or end. I feel it was lazily peiced together, and for lack of a better word choppy. I would recommend waiting to see this movie on video, and if this movie's advertising has intrigued you go look up the true events and cases on the internet. The information is clear, non confussing and a little spooky.

I thought that this movie was very interesting! I must say that I want to know more about the "Mothman" and where it comes from and the history behind it. The acting was amazing, especially at the begening with Debra Messing!!! She has to be a terrific actrice and extremely focuced to do the performance that she did!! The cinematics were very good in my opinion. The movie wasn't exactly action packed and the plot was fairly confusing. Afterwards I noted quite a few holes in the way it played out. If you can forgive that, it created a really eerie atmosphere and actually left me thinking about it after I left the theater. I felt the actors did a good job and the character development was fair, but could have been done a lot better in some cases. It's worth the price of a matinee to see.

I did not know what to expect when I went to see this movie other than I heard that you don't actually see the evilness (except in drawings) , much like the Blair Witch Project. Admittedly, this does add to the suspense of the film, as does its unique direction (choice of lighting, angles etc) However the movie still falls short in my view, mainly because although it is based on true events, the movie doesn't play in a believable way - it is even corny in some parts. The best thing about the movie is Debra Messing's almost cameo performance in the first 15 minutes.

This movie is eerie. The music is eerie. The direction is eerie. There are atleast 2 points in the movie that my hairs on my neck stood up. This could be due to the fact that the movie is based on actual events. The only problem is Hollywood has taken those events and played on them. The cinematography seems to be all over the place but as the movie goes along you become used to its confusing angles which add to the spookiness. Does it need to be seen in a cinema? No. Wait for video.

It's not what I expected, I wasn't scared out of my seat. The film or cinematography was excellent, very artsy, but the movie didn't seem to be fast enough or good enough. As you keep waiting for something to happen you merely get the actor from a small town explaining what should have been seen, and what we missed out on. It wasn't fulfilling.
